VATIS QUERELA.

DECUS gentis, columen tuorum,
Hoftium terror, gelido jacefne
Mortis amplexu, velut icta cœli
Fulmine pinus?

Neniam et vates tibi nullus edet,
Ipfe qui vatis numeros amabas?
Regiæ tutela domus, ab omni

Tuta procella.

Exfuli fanctum hofpitium dedifti,
Nec tibi deérunt lacrymæ fideles,
Nec fub obfcuras ego te filebo

Carceris umbras.

Fletibus quantis lacus intumefcet,
Quantus a ripa gemitus reducta
Surget, et quantum ingeminabit echo

Monte fragorem!

Luget invictam genus omne dextram
Et pedem curfu celeremque pugna,
Luget exftinctos, duce te perempto,
Stirpis honores.

IO

There breathes not clanfman of thy line,
But would have given his life for thine.-
O woe for Alpine's honour'd pine!

Sad was thy lot on mortal stage !—

The captive thrush may brook the cage,
The prifon'd eagle dies for rage.
Brave spirit, do not scorn my strain !
And, when its notes awake again,
Even fhe, fo long beloved in vain,
Shall with my harp her voice combine,
And mix her woe and tears with mine,
To wail Clan-Alpine's honour'd pine.

Nec tui quifquam generis fuperftat
Sanguinem qui non tibi prælianti
Et fuum pectus clypeum periclo

Sponte dediffet.

Triftis in terra tua fors; palumbes
Carceris clauftrum tolerare difcat;

Rumpit indignans aquila indecoras

Morte catenas.

Spiritus, noftros animofe cantus
Accipe, et planctum dabit ipfa virgo
Flebilem, dilecta nimis, fuprema

Dona fepulcro.

Pinus Alpina, heu! cecidit; dolete
Nobilis trunci, comites, ruinam,
Et ducis magni memores in urnam

Fundite queftus.

THE TWA CORBIES.

(OLD BALLAD.)

IS I was walking all alane

I heard twa' Corbies makin' a mane,

The t'ane unto the t'ither fay,

"Where shall we gang and dine to-day?

"In behint yon auld fail dyke

There lies, I wot, a new flain knight;

And nae body kens that he lies there,

But his hawk, and his hound, and his lady fair.

"His hound is to the hunting gane,

His hawk to fetch the wild fowl hame,

10

His lady has ta'en anither mate

So we may make our dinner fweet.

DUO CORVI.

OLUS ut errabam loca per deferta, querelam
Audivi corvos hanc iterare duos ;

Falfa puella novos fibi jam quæfivit amores,
Nil vetat ad pofitas nos fimul ire dapes.
