"Contains all the information which could be looked for in such a work, and gives it in a most convenient form and very completely. We may anhesitatingly recommend the work."-Solicitors' Journal. "This handy, compendious, and cheap work appears to contain everything that a practising Lawyer ought to have about him for immediate reference."-Law Quarterly Review. 'It should be in the hands of all members of both branches of the Profession."-Law Gazette. "The amount of information packed within the covers of this well-known book of reference is almost incredible. In addition to the Diary, it contains nearly 800 pages of closely printed matter, none of which could be omitted without, perhaps, detracting from the usefulness of the book. The publishers seem to have made it their aim to include in the Companion every item of information which the most exacting Lawyer could reasonably expect to find in its pages, and it may safely be said that no practising Solicitor, who has experienced the luxury of having it at his elbow, will ever be likely to try to do without it."-Law Journal. STEVENS & SONS Ltd., 119 & 120, Chancery-lane, London, W.C. CLERICAL, MEDICAL & GENERAL LIFE ASSURANCE SOCIETY, 15 ST. JAMES'S SQUARE, LONDON, S.W. Founded in 1824, this Society for many years valued at the conservative rate of 3 per cent. until, at the valuation made in 1891, it stepped out as one of the pioneers and adopted the rate of 2 per cent, thus standing to-day in the small group of offices which value upon that stringent basis. The Society has Special Reserves, over and above those required by the 2 per cent. Valuation, are therefore seen to have reached the exceptional sum of £370,255. THE NEW ANNUAL REPORT Presented at the 90th Annual General Meeting on November 6th showed Increased New Business. Increased Interest Earnings. Decreased Expenses of Management. The Society's Balance Sheet gives complete details of every Stock Exchange security, with the exact amount of stock in each case and the figure at which it stands in the books. It will be seen that a large portion of the Society's capital has been placed in securities of trustee character in Great Britain, her Colonies and Indian Empire, but that not one single penny of it has been invested in Brazil, in Mexico, or on the Continent of Europe. All the Society's mortgages on property within the United Kingdom, amounting to over £1,800,000-and there are none on property outside that area- are abundantly secured, with a wide margin sufficient to compensate for any possible depreciation, and there is no single instance in the Society's whole history of a default in the payment of interest upon them. |
