play houses, taverns, or ale houses, nor absent himself in any manner from his said service day nor night; but in all things as a faithful apprentice shall behave himself towards the said C. D. and all his, during the said term. AND that he the said C. D. the said apprentice in the business aforesaid shall and will teach and instruct, or cause to be taught and instructed. And also, that he the said C. D. shall and will find, provide, and allow unto and for his said apprentice, meet and sufficient meat, drink, physic, proper attendance in case of sickness or any accidents; and also washing, lodging, wearing apparel, both woollen and linen, of every kind, and all other things fit and convenient for his said apprentice during the said term. And for the true performance of all the covenants and agreements herein contained, each of the said parties doth bind himself unto the other of them by these presents. IN WITNESS

Another between a father and a son to a merchant, the father to find the son every necessary, the master only to teach the business.

THIS INDENTURE, made &c. between A. B. of &c. and C. his son of the one part, and D. E. of &c. of the other part, WITNESSETH, That the said C. with the consent and approbation of the said A. B. his father, testified by his being a party to and signing and sealing these presents, doth bind himself apprentice unto the said D. E. after the manner of an apprentice, to serve him the said D. E. from the day of the date hereof, for and during the term of years, and fully to be complete and ended; during which term the said apprentice shall and will well, faithfully and diligently to the utmost of his power and skill, at all times attend the service and employ himself in the business of his said master from the hours of o'clock in the morning until the hour of o'clock at night in every year; and that without the wilful or negligent losing or making away with any of the goods, wares, merchandises, effects, monies, or other thing or things whatsoever, which shall be delivered or put into the custody or care of the said C. by or belonging to the said D. E. or any of his correspondents. AND also that he the said C. the secrets of the said D. E. and of his correspondents shall keep, his lawful commands every where and in all things gladly do. Hurt to his said master he shall not do, or suffer it to be done by others.

Matrimony he shall not contract within the said term. He shall not buy or sell, or in any manner deal or traffic for his own private gain or advantage, or for the gain or advantage of any other person or persons, except for the said D. E. From the service of the said D. E. he shall not depart or absent himself without his leave, but in all things as a good and faithful apprentice shall and will demean and behave himself towards the said D. E. and all his during the said term. AND the said A. B. for himself, his executors and administrators, doth covenant, promise and agree, to and with the said D. E. his executors and administrators, that he the said A. B. his executors and administrators, shall and will find, provide and allow unto and for the said C. his son, during the said term of five years, all manner of clothes and apparel, both linen and woollen, and also washing, mending and repairing thereof. AND also good and sufficient meat, drink and lodging. AND thereof and therefrom, and from all actions, suits, costs, charges and damages, for or by reason thereof, shall and will well and sufficiently save and keep harmless and indemnified the said D. É. his executors and administrators, any law, custom or usage to the contrary notwithstanding. AND the said D. E. in consideration of the said service to be performed as aforesaid, and of the sum of of lawful &c. to him in hand paid at or before the sealing and delivery hereof by the said A. B. the receipt and payment whereof the said D. E. doth hereby acknowledge, doth covenant, promise and agree, to and with the said A. B. his executors, administrators and assigns, that he the said D. E. shall and will, by the best means in his power, teach and instruct, or cause to be taught and instructed, him the said C. the trade and business of a merchant; and also shall and will use his best endeavors to make him the said C. complete in the said business of a merchant. A common indenture.

THIS INDENTURE WITNESSETH, That doth put himself apprentice to

of his said master, nor lend them unlawfully to any. He shall not commit fornication, nor contract matrimony, within the said term. He shall not play at cards, dice, tables, or any other unlawful games, whereby his said master may have any loss. With his own goods or others, during the said term, without license of his said master, he shall neither buy nor sell. He shall not haunt taverns or play houses, nor absent himself from his said master's service day nor night unlawfully. But in all things as a faithful apprentice he shall behave himself towards his said master, and all his during the said term. AND the said his said apprentice in the same art of which he useth,

by the best means that he can, shall teach and instruct, or cause to be taught and instructed; finding unto his said apprentice sufficient meat, drink, lodging, and all other necessaries during the said term. AND for the true performance of all and every the said covenants and agreements, either of the said parties bindeth himself unto the other by these presents. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, &c.

An indenture for the sea.

THIS INDENTURE, made &c. between A. B. of &c. and C. D. his son, of the one part, and E. F. master of the ship or vessel called the G. in the West India trade, of the burthen of 600 tons, or thereabouts, now lying in the river of Thames, of the other part, WITNESSETH, That the said C. D. hath by and with the consent of the said A. B. his father, testified by his being a party to and signing and sealing these presents, and also of his own free and voluntary will, placed and bound himself apprentice unto the said E. F. to learn, attain and acquire the art, skill and perfect knowledge of navigating, managing and working of a ship and vessel, and every thing thereunto belonging, which he the said E. F. now followeth, and with him as an apprentice to abide and continue as well when on shore as on board such ship or vessel as he the said E. F. shall at any time be master or commander of, or any ways interested in, from the day of the date hereof until the said C. D. shall attain the full age of twenty-one years, he the said C. D. being now of the age of years, and from thence next ensuing, and fully to be complete and ended; and during all which term of years the said apprentice shall and will faithfully and diligently to the utmost of his power and skill serve his said master, his secrets keep, his lawful commands every where and in all things gladly do and obey. Hurt or damage to his said master he shall not do, or willingly suffer it to be done by others, but the same to the utmost of his power prevent, and shall immediately thereof give notice to his said master. Cards or any other games he shall not play, taverns or ale houses he shall not 'frequent : AND ALSO, that he the said apprentice shall not quit or absent himself from his said master or ship day or night without his consent, nor embezzle, waste, clandestinely or otherwise dispose, deliver, lend or alienate any goods, wares, merchandises, matters or things any ways belonging to his said master, passengers or ship or any cargo thereof, without the special order and approbation of his said master, but shall and will in every respect demean and behave himself towards his said master, officers and passengers as a good and faithful apprentice.
