WHEN 4,000,000 persons residing in houses, some of which are built without due regard to Sanitary arrangements, and so crowded together as is the case in the metropolitan area, very careful attention and a systematic inspection as to the sanitary condition of the dwellings of both the poor and the rich and their surroundings are imperative, which, if neglected, must eventually bring in their train the usual results of zymotic disease and death. Public attention has been recently directed to the subject, and the question of appointing additional Sanitary Inspectors is at the present time prominently before the vestries, district boards, and urban sanitary authorities; therefore it is an opportune occasion for the appearance of the Second Edition of this work.
