Antiphon. St. Matthew 21.
Cum appropinquaret.

WJerusalem, he sent before him

HEN the Lord drew nigh to

two of his disciples, saying * Go into the village over against you.

And straightway ye shall find an ass tied and a colt with her ; * whereon yet never man sat.

Loose them, * and bring them unto me. If any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, that the Lord hath need of them.

And they loosed the colt and brought him to Jesus:* and they put on him their clothes, and he sat upon him. And as he went, a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees and strawed them in the way. And they that came after cried, saying; *Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David ; * Hosanna in the highest; have mercy upon us, O Son of David.

Another Antiphon. St. John 12.

WHEN

Cum audisset.

WHEN the people heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, * they cut down branches from the palm trees, and went forth to meet him.

And the children cried saying: * This is he that cometh for the salvation of the people.

This is our Saviour * and the Redeemer of Israel.

How mighty is he, *whom the Thrones and Dominations go forth to meet. Fear not, O daughter of Sion ; * behold thy King cometh unto thee, sitting upon an ass's colt, as it is written. Hail, O thou King and Creator of the world, who hast come to redeemus. Another Antiphon. Ante sex dies.

SIX

IX days before the Passover the Lord came to Bethany: * and when he drew nigh the city of Jerusalem, the children went forth to meet him. And they carried in their hands branches, of palm trees, * and cried with a loud voice, saying, Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed art thou that comest in the multitude of thy mercies; * Hosanna in the highest.

AND

Another Antiphon. Occurrunt turbae. ND multitudes to-day hasten forth with branches of the palm trees* to greet the Redeemer of the world, And to render the homage * due to so mighty a victor.

The nations of the earth now proclaim the Son of God; * and throughout the heavens their voices ring in praise of Christ, Hosanna.

Another Antiphon. Cum angelis et pueris. ND on this day we also are found among the angels and the children; * and cry unto the conqueror of death, Hosanna in the highest.

AND

Another Antiphon.

*

Turba multa.

HE multitudes which came together for the feast day, cried unto the Lord: Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest.

On the return of the Procession, two or four Cantors enter the Church, and shutting the door turn toward the Procession, and sing the first stanza of the following hymn, Gloria Laus, which stanza is repeated by the Priest and Choir outside who use it for a refrain after each strophe of the hymn.

For convenience two versions of the hymn are subjoined:

(a) From the American Hymnal:

LL glory, laud, and honour to thee, Redeemer, King,

To whom the lips of children made sweet Hosanna ring,

Thou art the King of Israel, thou David's Royal Son,

Who in the Lord's Name comest, the King and Blessed One.

R. All glory.

The company of Angels are praising thee on high,

And mortal men and all things created

make reply.

R. All glory.

The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went ;

Our praise and prayer and anthems before thee we present.

R. All glory.

To thee before thy passion they sang their hymns of praise,

To thee now high exalted our melody we raise.

R. All glory.

Thou didst accept their praises, accept the prayers we bring,

Who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King.

R. All glory.

(b) A new version adapted to the ancient proper plainsong melody:

'LORY and laud and honour be to

Thou to whom gracious children sang their devout Hosannas.

R. Glory and laud.

Israel's King art thou, king David's glorious offspring, Who, in the Name of the Lord, approachest, blessed Monarch.

R. Glory and laud.

Glory to thee on high the heavenly hosts are proclaiming; Answereth mortal man, respondeth all creation R. Glory and laud.

The people of the Hebrews went forth to meet thee with palm leaves; With prayers, vows and hymns, behold we come before thee.

R. Glory and laud.

Thee, on thy way to die, they hailed, offering praises: But we lift up our songs to thee forever reigning.

R. Glory and laud.

Pleasing to thee were they; may our devotion be pleasing: Merciful King, kind King, thou whom all goodness pleaseth.

R. Glory and laud.

The Solemn Procession goes to the Sanctuary, and sings:

OME, faithful people, come away,

pay,

It is the Feast of Palms to-day-
Hosanna in the Highest.

the

They thronged before, behind, around, They cast palm branches on ground,

And, still rose up the joyful sound—
Hosanna in the Highest.

Blessed is Israel's King! they cry,
Blessed is He that cometh nigh ;
In the name of God most High-
Hosanna in the Highest.
