These Pumps are free from that liability to choke which is common to other Pumps, and their Working Parts are not susceptible of derangement either from wear or from being long out of use. They pass entirely through them, with ease, any substance that may enter the Suction Pipes. The Novelties in these Pumps are their adaptation to the varied duties of Ships' Pumps; the facilities they afford for Cleansing the Suction Pipes, and for Sounding or Examining the Valves; the readiness with which they may be used for Ventilating the Bilge, or for acting as a Syphon either for Watering the Ship, or for extinguishing Accidental Fires on board; the rapidity with which they can be converted into Fire Pumps, or be applied to the Washing of Decks; and their capability of Pumping from Several Compartments.

T. SUFFIELD AND CO.

Also respectfully solicit the attention of STEAM SHIP BUILDERS and OWNERS to their Large and Varied STOCK of

ASSORTED STORES FOR MARINE PURPOSES.

They keep a Large Stock of Goods, of their own Manufacture and from the Best Makers, constantly on view; so that by a visit to their Works or Depôt, much valuable time may be saved by Managers, Engineers, and other Gentlemen who may require such Stores, together with a further saving in the cost of such Articles.

SHIPS' PUMPS OF HER MAJESTY'S NAVY.

JOSIAH STONE,
STONE,

Sole Manufacturer of DOWNTON'S well-known and much approved SHIPS' PUMPS, which have been used in preference to all others on board the vessels of Her Majesty's Navy, for upwards of thirty years, and have given the greatest satisfaction, effectually answering all the purposes required of any Ships' Pumps, and eapable of throwing most powerful jets of water in case of fire.

These Pumps have also been most extensively used on board merchant vessels, both at home and abroad, and have been supplied to the Royal Navies of France, Prussia, Holland, Russia, Spain, and Turkey. The Pumps are portable, as they may be easily removed from the ship and put to work in a boat alongside in a few minutes. Each pump is fitted with a large foot valve plate (which may be placed in any part of the vessel most convenient), and from which communication is made to any number of distinct compartments in the vessel. In case of any of these pipes fouling, the water, by an almost momentary attachment, may be forced from the Pump downwards, so as to clear all obstructions, preventing any possibility of stoppage. The valves are of the simplest description, and being faced with ordinary leather discs, the latter may be renewed in A few minutes by the most inexperienced hands. By the peculiar construction of these Pumps, a most perfect and uninterrupted flow of water may be maintained; so uniform as to be undistinguishable from that proceeding from a cistern. The Pumps are made of several sizes, those of 7, 9, and 12 inches bore being most generally used. They may, however, be ordered of any dimensions required, and may be fitted either with one or two fly wheels. A standard, &c., is also supplied with these Pumps, te enable them, when necessary, to be used as ordinary hand-lever pumps.

The Equilibrium Ball-Valve is simple and certain in its action, and is cheaper than the common cocks now in use. The Cottage Valves are suitable for application to any kind of basin; and, as they shut against the pressure, no concussion in the pipes can possibly occur.

These cocks have been extensively and most successfully used in many towns, under continuous high pressure, varying from 100 to 350 feet; their efficiency and durability is, by experience, established.

TESTIMONIALS.

BEARING PRIVATE MARK.

"Polytechnic Chemical School, London. "This is to certify, that I have carefully conducted a series of experiments with various gas burners in present use, and find that Hart's Patent Economising Gas Burner' is the most economical of all, producing, when compared with others, a saving of forty per cent. Signed this 14th day of December, 1858, EDWARD J. GARDNER, Professor of Chemistry, &c., &c., &c.', "7 Chester Street, Grosvenor Place, Pimlico.

"309 Regent Street."

"I have Mr. Hart's Gas Economising Burner fitted to every branch in my house, and can speak in the highest terms of its success. The light is perfectly steady, and the flame more brilliant, with perfect combustion, so that the air is by no means oppressive as formerly: the ceilings have no chance of being blackened, and the gilt frames and (Signed.) furniture cannot now, as before, be injured. I most warmly recommend their adoption. "November 3rd, 1858." "WILLIAM V. PETTIGREW, M.D., Hon. F.R.C.S. of England, &c., &c., &c."

"Having tried Mr. Hart's Patent Gas Economising Burner, I do not hesitate to state, that it gives perfect satisfaction, and entirely dispenses with the use of any regulator whatever.

"From its perfect regulation of the pressure requisite for perfect combustion, it produces a white and steady light, without the slightest noise, which proves its perfect combustion:-for wherever there is a hissing, as is usual, there is a waste of gas-the gas being imperfectly burnt or 'fried'-dispensing its effluvia throughout the apartment. "November 15th, 1858." "ANDREW STEINMETZ."

(Signed.)

"Junior United Service Club, London, Secretary's Office, 21st January, 1859. Sir,-After a long course of Experiments with your Patent Economising Gas Burners, the result of which is highly satisfactory, the Committee have decided on their adoption throughout the Club, and I herewith enclose order for same. I am, Sir, your obedient Servant, "Mr. H. W. Hart, 69 Fleet Street."

"HUBERT G. de CARTERET, Secretary."

"44 Gloucester Square, Hyde Park, January 21st, 1859. "Major-General Moncrieff has had Mr. Hart's Patent Gas Burners fitted in his house for some weeks past, and has great pleasure in testifying to their efficiency. As far as Major-General Moncrieff can judge, they fully come up to the description given of them by the Patentee, and are very much superior to any burner Major-General Moncrieff has yet seen tried. "To Mr. Herbert William Hart."

"176 & 177 Strand, London, W.C., January 18th, 1859.

Dear Sir,-I have much pleasure in certifying to the very satisfactory result of a trial of your Patent Gas Economising Burner. "This Burner regulates and distributes the delivery of the gas in a manner to produce a very great amount of light, as well as to effect a considerable saving of gas, by preventing a large proportion of it from being blown through partially consumed, and which partial combustion is a double source of injury and annoyance-it soils the ceiling and deteriorates the atmosphere. I am, Dear Sir, very truly yours,

"To Mr. Hart, 69 Fleet Street."

64

(Signed.)

SAMUEL SAINSBURY."

It is the continued remark of scientific men that HART'S PATENT ECONOMIZING GAS BURNER only requires to be known to be adopted.

Wherever there is a sufficient supply of Gas to produce a reasonable amount of light, HART'S PATENT ECONOMIZING GAS BURNER becomes an essential, obviating all objections to the use of Gas in private apartments.

HART'S PATENT ECONOMIZING GAS BURNER is considered by all scientific men to be the great desideratum of the age-the cheapest and most economical.

Hart's Patent Economising Gas Burner has been highly approved of by the Sureyor of Windsor Castle, and is now in use in various parts of that building.
