Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price, Isa. lv. 1.

4. He shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy, Psa. lxxii. 12, 13. See also Psalms xxii. 26; lxix. 32; Isa. lxi. 1.

5. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, Isa. xlii. 3.

6. He shall feed his flock like a hepherd: he shall gather the ambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, Isa. xl. 11.

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink, John vii. 57

The poor have the gospel preached to them.-Behold, a friend of publicans and sinners, Matt. xi. 5, 19.

Jesus had compassion on a beggar who sat by the way-side, and restored sight to him, though his disciples would have had him pass without taking any notice of the case, Mark x. 46-52.

A woman in the city, which was a sinner, stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven; go in peace, Luke vii. 37, 38, 48, 50.

Mary sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word, Luke x. 39.

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, etc.-And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them, Mark x. 13-16.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones, Matt. xviii. 10.

Jesus saith unto him, Feed my lambs, John xxi. 15.

7. The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up, Psa, Ixix. 9.

8. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street, Isa. xlii. 2.

9. He shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears, Isa. xi. 3.

10. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord, Isa. xi. 2, 3.

11. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth, Isa. liii. 7.

And Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: and when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, John ii. 13-15.

He went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret, John vii. 10.

When the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, he left Judea, and departed again into Galilee, John iv. 1, 3.

-And charged them that they should not make him known. --That they should tell no man, Matt. xii. 16; Mark vii. 36.

This poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury, Mark xii. 43.

Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? Matt. ix. 4.

Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more, John viii. 11.

He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me, Matt. xxvi. 23.

All that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers, Luke ii. 47.

Whence hath this man this wisdom? Matt. xiii. 54.

No man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions, Matt. xxii. 46.

Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, John xvi. 30.

Peter having a sword drew it. and smote the high-priest's servant. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Fa ther hath given me, shall I not drink it? John xviii. 10, 11.

12. He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth, Isa. liii. 9.

And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing, Mark xv. 3.

When they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him.-Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do, Luke xxiii. 33, 34.

Pilate said, I find no fault in this man, Luke xxiii. 4.

Judas said, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood, Matt. xxvii. 4.

Which of you convinceth me of sin? John viii. 46.

The other class of correspondences which we may notice are those which regard circumstances in the histories of the Messiah, of the prophets, and of Jesus respectively. These are numerous. The following four have relation to his origin.

1. His descent from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, Gen. xxii. 18; xxvi. 4; xxviii. 14.

2. His descent from Judah

Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: the sceptre shall not depart from Judah, until Shiloh come, Gen. xlix. 8, 10.

The genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him the chief ruler, 1 Chron. v. 1, 2.

3. His descent from David.

There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots, Isa. xi. 1.

I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth, Jer. xxiii. 5.

Which was the son of Jacob,Isaac,-Abraham, Luke iii. 34.

Which was the son of Juda, Luke iii. 33.

Which was the son of David, Luke iii. 31.

He (Joseph) was of the house and lineage of David, Luke ii. 4.

4. His birth in Bethlehem.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting, Micah v. 2.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, Matt. ii. 1.

Let us now compare the accounts of the prophets and evangelists with regard to the public life and ministry of the personage whom they respectively delineate. The following points in the ancient predictions of the Messiah are express: 1. That he should be preceded by a harbinger. 2. That his external condition should be mean. 3. That his course should be one of suffering. 4. That he should be held in low estimation by his countrymen. 5. Should be even rejected by them. 6. Should be, notwithstanding, an object of visible Divine complacency. 7. Should work miracles, and principally benevolent ones. 8. Should make a public and triumphal entry into Jerusalem. 9. Should use on this occasion the foal of an ass. And 10. Should make an authoritative entrance into the temple.

1. Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me, Mal. iii. Î.

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God, Isa. xl. 3.

2. He shall grow up as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him, Isa. liii. 2.

3. A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, Isa. liii. 3.

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying. Repent ye: for the kingdom of hea 'ven is at hand.-The same John said, He that cometh after ne is mightier than I, whose shoes, etc., Matt. iii. 1, 2, 4, 11.

He (John) said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight, etc., John i. 23.

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him, John iii. 28.

Is not this the carpenter's son? Matt. xiii. 55.

As for this "fellow," we know not from whence he is, John ix, 29.

The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. Matt. viii. 20.

My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death, Matt, xxvi. 38.

4. To him whom man despiseth, Isa. xlix. 7.

He was despised, and we esteemed him not, Isa. liii. 3.

He shall be for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, Isa. viii. 14.

5. To him whom the nation abhorreth, Isa. xlix. 7.

He is rejected of men, Isa. liii. 3.

The stone which the builders refused, etc., Psa. cxviii. 22.

6. Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth, Isa. xlii. 1.

Thus saith God the Lord.-I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand. The Lord hath said unto me,Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified, Isa. xlii. 5, 6; xlix. 1, 3.

7. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing, Isa. xxxv. 5, 6.

8. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem behold, thy King cometh unto thee, Zech. ix. 9.

9. Lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass, Zech. ix. 9.

10. And the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, Mal. iii, 1.

And they were offended in him, Matt. xiii. 57.

Shall Christ come out of Galilee?-Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet, John vii. 41, 52.

Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? John i. 46.

Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, etc. Matt. xxvii. 63.

Then cried they, Not this man, but Barabbas, John xviii. 40.

Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, have no king but Cesar, John xix. 15.

Jesus being baptised,—a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased, Luke iii. 21, 22.

Then came there a voice from heaven saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again, John xii. 28.

Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, Matt. xi. 4, 5.

And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem,-a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David, etc., Matt. xxi. 1, 8, 9.

Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon, John xii. 14.

And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought et Matt. xxi 19
