And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9¶ When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young 10 child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced II with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him and when they had opened their treasures, k they pre-k Ps. 72. 10. sented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and 12 myrrh. 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy 14 him. When he arose, he took the young child and 15 his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: and was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, 16 saying, mOut of Egypt have I called my son. 3 Ἐν δὲ ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις παραγίνεται Ἰωάννης ὁ 2 βαπτιστὴς, κηρύσσων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ λέ

γων, Μετανοεῖτε ἤγγικε γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.
3 οὗτος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ῥηθεὶς ὑπὸ Ησαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέ- 2
γοντος, Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ετοιμάσατε τὴν 3
4 ὁδὸν Κυρίου· εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ. αὐτὸς δὲ 6
ὁ Ἰωάννης εἶχε τὸ ἔνδυμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τριχῶν καμήλου, καὶ
ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ· ἡ δὲ τροφὴ αὐτ
τοῦ ἦν ἀκρίδες καὶ μέλι ἄγριον.

5 Τότε ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ πᾶσα ἡ 5
6Ἰουδαία καὶ πᾶσα ἡ περίχωρος τοῦ Ἰορδάνου· καὶ ἐβα-
πτίζοντο ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ὑπ' αὐτοῦ, ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς
η ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν. Ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ
Σαδδουκαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα αὐτοῦ, εἶπεν
αὐτοῖς, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν
8 ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς; ποιήσατε οὖν καρποὺς ἀξίους
ο τῆς μετανοίας· καὶ μὴ δόξητε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, Πατέρα
ἔχομεν τὸν ̓Αβραάμ λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν, ὅτι δύναται ὁ Θεὸς
το ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ ̓Αβραάμ. ἤδη δὲ
καὶ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν
δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν, ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ
τι βάλλεται. ἐγὼ μὲν βαπτίζω ὑμᾶς ἐν ὕδατι εἰς μετάνοιαν
ὁ δὲ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος, ἰσχυρότερός μου ἐστὶν, οὗ οὐκ η

4 Τότε ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνήχθη εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ὑπὸ τοῦ Πνεύ- 12 2 ματος, πειρασθῆναι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου. καὶ νηστεύσας ἡμέ ρας τεσσαράκοντα καὶ νύκτας τεσσαράκοντα, ὕστερον ἐπεί3 νασε. καὶ προσελθὼν αὐτῷ ὁ πειράζων εἶπεν, Εἰ υἱὸς εἶ 4 τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἰπὲ ἵνα οἱ λίθοι οὗτοι ἄρτοι γένωνται. Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε, Γέγραπται, Οὐκ ἐπ ̓ ἄρτῳ μόνῳ ζήσεται ἄνθρωπος, ἀλλ ̓ ἐπὶ παντὶ ῥήματι ἐκπορευομένῳ διὰ στό5 ματος Θεοῦ. Ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Πάλιν γέγραπται, Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου. 8 Πάλιν παραλαμβάνει αὐτὸν ὁ διάβολος εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν λίαν, καὶ δείκνυσιν αὐτῷ πάσας τὰς βασιλείας τοῦ κόσμου 9 καὶ τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Ταῦτα πάντα σοι 1ο δώσω, ἐὰν πεσὼν προσκυνήσῃς μοι.
