their own country another way. 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of

the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee

word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy 14 him. When he arose, he took the young

child and 15 his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: and

was there until the death of Herod : that it might be

fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, 16 saying, mOut of Egypt have I called my son. 1 Then m Hos, 11.1.

Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according

to the time which he had diligently enquired of the 17 wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken 18 by n Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there n Jer. 31.15.

των, “Ότι Ναζωραίος κληθήσεται. 3 ΕΝ δε ταις ημέραις εκείναις παραγίνεται Ιωάννης ο 3 2 βαπτιστής, κηρύσσων εν τη ερήμω της Ιουδαίας και λέ

γων, Μετανοείτε: ήγγικε γαρ η βασιλεία των ουρανών. 3 ούτος γάρ έστιν ο ρηθείς υπό Ησαΐου του προφήτου λέ- 2

έχομεν τον Αβραάμ λέγω γαρ υμίν, ότι δύναται ο Θεός το έκ τών λίθων τούτων εγείραι τέκνα το 'Αβραάμ. ήδη δε

και η αξίνη προς την ρίζαν των δένδρων κείται πάν ούν
δένδρον μη ποιούν καρπόν καλόν, εκκόπτεται και εις πυρ
βάλλεται. εγώ μεν βαπτίζω υμάς εν ύδατι εις μετάνοιαν
ο δε οπίσω μου ερχόμενος, ισχυρότερός μου έστιν, ου ουκ 7

είμι ικανός τα υποδήματα βαστάσαι αυτός υμάς βαπτίσει 12 εν Πνεύματι αγίω και πυρί. ου το πτύoν εν τη χειρί αυ

Τότε παραγίνεται ο Ιησούς από της Γαλιλαίας επί τον 9 Ιορδάνης προς τον Ιωάννην, του βαπτισθήναι υπ' αυτού. 14 ο δε Ιωάννης διεκώλυεν αυτόν λέγων, Εγώ χρείαν έχω 15 υπό σου βαπτισθήναι, και συ έρχη πρός με; αποκριθείς

δε ο Ιησούς είπε προς αυτόν, "Αφες άρτι» ούτω γαρ πρέ

πον έστιν ημίν πληρώσαι πάσαν δικαιοσύνην. τότε αφίη16 σιν αυτόν. Και βαπτισθείς ο Ιησούς ανέβη ευθύς από το

του ύδατος και ιδού ανεώχθησαν αυτό οι ουρανοί, και

είδε το Πνεύμα του Θεού καταβαίνον ώσει περιστεράν, 17 και έρχόμενον επ' αυτόν. και ιδού φωνή εκ των ουρανών 11

4 4. Τότε ο Ιησούς ανήχθη εις την έρημον υπό του Πνεύ- 12 2 ματος, πειρασθήναι υπό του διαβόλου. και νηστεύσας ημέ

ρας τεσσαράκοντα και νύκτας τεσσαράκοντα, ύστερον επεί3 νασε. και προσελθών αυτώ ο πειράζων είπεν, Ει υιός εί 4 του Θεού, είπε ίνα οι λίθοι ούτοι άρτοι γένωνται. Ο δε αποκριθείς είπε, Γέγραπται, Ουκ επ' άρτω μόνω ζήσεται άνθρωπος, αλλ' επί παντί ρήματι εκπορευομένω διά στό5 ματος Θεού. Τότε παραλαμβάνει αυτόν ο διάβολος εις

την αγίαν πόλιν, και ίστησιν αυτόν επί το πτερύγιον του 6 ιερού, και λέγει αυτώ, Ει υιός εί του Θεού, βάλε σεαυτόν κάτω γέγραπται γαρ, "Οτι τους αγγέλους αυτού εντελεί

ται περί σου, και επί χειρών αρουσί σε, μήποτε προση κόψης προς λίθον τον πόδα σου. "Έφη αυτή ο Ιησούς,
