TO THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, HELD ON WEDNESDAY, THE 24th DAY OF APRIL, 1872.

The Directors have much pleasure in meeting the Proprietors to report the Proceedings of the Society during the year 1871.

· Notwithstanding the general depression in Life Assurance business, 145 New Policies have been issued in the past year, assuring £233,257, and yielding £8250 18s. 11d. in Premiums, of which £1,690 14s. 6d. was in respect of single Premiuins.

The Net Premium Revenuc, after deducting Re-assurance Premiums, was £79,977 19s. 1d., and the Total Revenue from all sources £107,816 16s. 5d.

Claims have fallen in by the Deaths of 32 lives who were assured under 43 Policies for £75,405, of which £45,450 was effected on the Participating Scale, carrying Bonus Additions of £12,405, and £17,550 on the Non-participating Scale. Of the foregoing amounts, £10,803 4s. 5d. was re assured in other Offices, thus reducing the actual charge to the net amount of £64,596 15s. 7d. as shown in the Account. This last amount includes the sum of £5,054, which it will be remembered was specially reserved in the Valuation on 31st December, 1870, for the Claims then announced and standing for admission, and also the sum of £3,999 added to the Assurances in respect of the Bonus declared last year.

The expenses of Management, although no extension has been made in their usual moderate scale, show a slight increase this year : this is chiefly due to a sum of £245, which the Directors have thought desirable to charge annually, in addition to the ground-rent of £84, in respect of the Society's house, so that at the expiration of the lease it may stand nil in the Accounts.

The sum of £9,936 10s. Od. was paid for the surrender of Bonus Additions, thereby extinguishing a reversionary liability to the amount of £21,632.

The Proprietors' and Assurance Funds, together, amount to £631,762 173. 5d., and are invested at an average rate of interest of £4 165. 5d. per cent.

The increase of £20,000 in the Proprietors' Fund is owing to the share of the Quinquennial surplus transferred to that fund in accordance with the Society's Deed of Settlement.

It is with regret the Directors have to announce the deaths of their late colleagues, Mr. EDWARD LAWRANCE and Mr. Thomas LOFTUS. Sir BARNES PEACOCK, who was elected a director at the last Annual Meeting, finding that he cannot give the needful attention to the business of the Society, has felt unable to accept the appointment. These vacancies have to be filled up by the Proprietors.

The Directors who retire by rotation are Messrs. ABBOTT, BURNE, GWINNETT, JAY, VIZARD, and WARTER, and they are all eligible for re-election.

The retiring Anditors are Mr. JOSIAH T. Paul (Auditor for the Assured) and Mr. Philip ROBERTS (Auditor for the Proprietors), who are also eligible for re-election.

In conclusion, the Diroctors would remind the Proprietors of the very high order of security offered by the Society, its val nation reserves being computeti according to the strictest principles, and no portion of the future profits being trenched upon. The Directors wonld invite the co-operation of the Proprietors in making these important facts more widely known, and, while thus assisting to enlarge the sphere of the Society's operations, they will be aiding in the extension of a sound system of Life Assuracce Finance.
