PREFERMENTS AND MEMORANDA.

IN Michaelmas Term 1856, Sir ALEXANDER JAMES EDMUND COCKBURN, Her Majesty's Attorney General, was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, in the room of Sir JoOHN JERVIS, deceased. He gave rings with the motto "Fiat Justitia."

Sir RICHARD BETHELL, Her Majesty's Solicitor General, was appointed Attorney General, and the Right Hon. JAMES STUART WORTLEY, Recorder of London, was appointed Her Majesty's Solicitor General.

In the vacation after Hilary Term, Sir EDWARD HALL ALDERSON, one of the Barons of the Court of Exchequer, died at his residence after a short illness. He was succeeded by WILLIAM FRY CHANNELL, Esq., Serjeant-at-Law, who was shortly after knighted.

In Trinity Term, the Right Hon. JAMES STUART WORTLEY resigned the office of Solicitor General, in consequence of ill health. HENRY SINGER KEATING, Esq., one of Her Majesty's Counsel, was shortly after appointed to the vacant office, and received the honour of knighthood.

Mr. Serjeant WRANGHAM, Mr. Serjeant SHEE, and Mr. Serjeant BYLES, were appointed Queen's Serjeants.

In the vacation after Trinity Term, the Hon. EDMUND PHIPPS, of the Inner Temple, CHARLES WORDSWORTH, Esq., of the Inner Temple, JOHN LOCKE, Esq., of the Inner Temple, ALLAN MACLEAN SKINNER, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn, JOHN WALTER HUDDLESTON, Esq., of Gray's Inn, and ROBERT LUSH, Esq., of Gray's Inn, were appointed Her Majesty's Counsel.

Mr. Serjeant PIGOTT received a Patent of Precedence, giving him rank next after JOHN LOCKE, Esq.

Shortly after, in the same vacation, JOHN MONK, Esq., of the Middle Temple, WILLIAM FORSYTH, Esq., of the Inner Temple, and HENRY MANISTY, Esq., of Gray's Inn, were appointed Her Majesty's Counsel.
