CHAPTER 38

An Act to amend The School Assessment Act.

IS Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, enacts as follows:

1. The School Assessment Act, being chapter 25 of the The Act statutes of 1915, is amended as hereinafter set forth.

2. Section 3 is amended by striking out "or (c)" Section 3 in the second line and inserting the word "or" between “(a)” and “(b).”

3. Paragraph 7 of section 5 is amended by substituting Section 3, the article "a" for "an" in the first line and striking out amended the word "incorporated."

4. Subsection (9) of section 5a, as enacted by section Section Ja 3 of chapter 33 of the statutes of 1917 (second session), (9) is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

"(9) Where a soldier has died while on active service, the benefit of this section shall accrue to his personal representatives. In such case the period of exemption shall not extend beyond the thirty-first day of December, 1919."

5. Section 12 is amended by striking out the words Section 12 "not exceeding two per cent. of the assessed value of the land in the district as shown on the assessment roll" in the sixth and seventh lines.

6.-(1) Subsection (2) of section 15 is repealed and Section 15 the following substituted therefor:

"(2) In the event of any taxes remaining unpaid after the thirty-first day of December of the year in which the same are levied, there shall be added thereto by way of penalty a sum equal to eight per centum of the arrears; and upon the expiry of each succeeding year during which the whole or any portion of the combined amount of taxes and penalty or penalties remains unpaid, an additional sum equal to eight per centum of the arrears shall be added thereto.

"(3) Amounts so added shall form part of the taxes which by the first subsection of this section are created a special lien upon land."

(2) Subsection (3) is renumbered (4).

7. Subsection (3) of section 26 is amended by inserting the word "rural" before the word "municipality" in the sixth line.

8. Section 35 is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

"35. The board of trustees of every town district shall, on or before the fifteenth day of March in each year, furnish to the clerk of the city or town municipality within which the district lies, a statement showing in detail the sum required for school purposes for the current year.

"(2) Where the district lies within different municipalities, the board shall furnish the clerk or secretary treasurer of each with a statement of the total sum required for the purposes of the district for the current year, and the assessed values of the properties rateable for the purposes of the district in the several municipalities as shown by the revised assessment rolls of such municipalities for the preceding year."

CHAPTER 39

An Act to amend The School Grants Act.

IS Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the
Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, enacts as

follows:

1. The School Grants Act, being chapter 102 of The The Act Revised Statutes of Saskatchewan 1909, is amended in the manner hereinafter set forth.

2. (1) Paragraph 2 of section 3 is amended by Section 3 adding thereto the following clause:

"(e) For encouraging the teaching of household science and making proper provision for the noon lunch, a grant equal to fifty per cent. of the initial cost of approved equipment, such grant not to exceed twenty dollars."

(2) Paragraph 5 of section 3, as enacted by section 2 of chapter 50 of the statutes of 1918-19, is amended by substituting the words "two dollars" for the words. "one dollar" in the third line thereof.

3. The following is inserted immediately after section 3: New section 3a "3a. In case it should be shown to the satisfaction of the minister that without financial assistance a rural district is unable to erect a teacher's residence, and such is requisite for the proper operation of a school, a grant may be made for the purpose by the Lieutenant Governor in Council of a sum not exceeding one third of the cost of such residence as shown by proper vouchers submitted to the department."

4. (1) Paragraph 9 of section 4 is amended by strik- Section 4 ing out the words "and the teacher" and the word "joint" in the third line thereof.

(2) Paragraph 10 of section 4, as amended by section 4 of chapter 24 of the statutes of 1915, is further amended by substituting the word "flags" for the expression "a flag" in the sixth line thereof and by substituting the words "flags are" for the words "flag is" in the said line.

CHAPTER 40

An Act to amend The School Attendance Act.

IS Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the
Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, enacts as

follows:

1. The School Attendance Act, being chapter 19 of the statutes of 1917, is amended in the manner hereinafter set forth.

2. Paragraph 1 of section 2 is amended by inserting Section 2 the words "teaching day" after the word "board" in the amended second line thereof.

3. Clause (b) of section 4 is amended by adding Section 4 thereto the words "and the teacher is kept advised.

4. Section 5 is amended by inserting the words "for Section 3 such time as may be necessary" after the word "hearing" amended in the third line thereof.

5.-(1) Subsection (1) of section 6 is amended by Section 6 substituting the expression "$50" for the expression "$20" in the last line thereof.

(2) Subsection (2) of section 6 is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

"(2) Where in the opinion of the board of trustees the services of a child over the age of thirteen years who has passed grade V of the public school course of study are required in husbandry or in urgent or necessary household duties such board of trustees by certificate. setting forth the reasons therefor and issued only by resolution at a regular or special meeting of the board may relieve such child from attending school for such period or periods as such board may deem proper but not for more than thirty teaching days in any year."

6. Subsection (1) of section 16 is amended:

(a) by inserting the words "together with such other
information as the department may require"
