make this exhortation upon the words of A Father, we give thee humble thanks, for

the gospel.

Fo

Riends, you heare in this gospel the words of our Saviour Chrift, that he commanded the children to be brought unto him, how he blamed those that would have kept them from him,how he exhorted all men to follow their innocency. Ye perceive how by his outward gefture and deed, he declared his good will toward them: for he embraced them in his aras,he laid his hands upon them, and bleffed them. Doubt ye not therefore, but earnestly Leleeve, that he hath likewife favourably received this prefent infant, that he hath embraced him with the arms of his mercy, that he hath given unto him the bleffing of eternall life, and made him partaker of his everlafting kingdome. Wherefore we being thus perfwaded of the good will of our heavenly Father, declared by his Sonne Jefus Chrift, toward this infant, let us faithfully and devoutly give thanks unto him, and fay the prayer which the Lord himself taught, and in declaration of our faith, let us recite the articles contained in our creed.

Here the minifter with the godfathers and godmothers fhall fay,

Our Father which art in heaven, &c. Then fball the priest demand the name of the childe, which being by the godfathers godmothers pronounced, the minifter shall fay, Doft thou in the name of this childe for fake the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all the covetous defires of the fame, the carnall de fires of the flesh, and not to follow and be led by them? Answer.

I forfake them all.

Minister.

Doft thou in the name of this childe profeffe this faith, to beleeve in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth? and in Jefus Chrift his onely begotten Sonne our Lord? And that he was conceived by the holy Ghoft, born of the virgin Mary, that he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, that he went down into hell, and alfo did rife again the third day, that he afcended into heaven, and fitteth at the right Hand of God the Father Almighty, and from thence he fhall come again at the end of the world to judge the quick and the dead? And do you in his name beleeve in the holy Ghost, the holy catholick church, the communion of faints, the remiffion of finnes, refurrection, and everlasting life after death s

that thou haft vouchsafed to call us to the knowledge of thy grace, and faith in thee: in creafe this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore: give thy holy Spirit to this infant, that he being born again, and being made heir of everlasting falvation, through our Lord Jesus Christ, may continue thy fervant, and attain thy promise, through the fame our Lord Jefus Chrift thy Sonne, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unitie of the fame holy Spirit everlastingly. Amen.

you

Then fhall the minifter make this exhortation to the godfathers and godmothers. you to forfake the devil and all his works, Orafmuch as this childe hath promised by to beleeve in God and to serve him: you muft remember that it is your part and dutie to fee that this infant be taught, fo foon as he shall be able to learn, what a folemn vow, promise, and profeffion he hath made by you. And that he may know these things the better, ye fhall call upon him to heare fermons, and chiefly ye shall provide that he may learn the creed, the Lords prayer, and the ten commandments in the English tongue, and all other things which a Chriftian man ought to know and beleeve to his fouls health: and that this childe may be vertuoufly brought up, to lead a godly and a Chriftian life, remembring alway that baptifme doth reprefent unto us our profeffion, which is to follow the example of our Saviour Chrift, and be made like unto him, that as he died and rofe again for us, fo fhould we which are baptized, die from finne, and rife again unto righteoufneffe, continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all vertue and godlineffe of living.

And fo forth as in publick baptifme.
But if they which bring the infants to the
church, do make fuch uncertain answers to
the pricfts questions, as that it cannot ap-
peare that the childe was baptized with
water, In the name of the Father, and of
the Sonne, and of the holy Ghoft, (which
are effentiall parts of baptifme) then let
the priest baptize it in form above-writ-
ten concerning publick baptifme, favirg
that at the dipping of the childe in the
font, befhall use this form of words.

If thou be not already baptized, N. I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Sonne, and of the holy Ghoft. Amen

The order of Confirmation, or laying on of hands upon children baptized, and able to render an account of their faith, according to

the catechifme following.

10 the end that confirmation may be miniftred to the more edifying of such as shall receive Ti it (according to S.Pauls doctrine, who teacheth that all things should be done in the church to the edification of the fame) it is thought good, that none bereafter shall be confirmed, but fach as can fay in their mother tongue the articles of the faith, the Lords prayer, and the ten commandments, and can also answer to fuch questions of this short catechifme, as the bishop (or fuch as be shall appoint ) shall by bis difcretian appose them in. And this order is most conve nient to be obferved for divers confiderations.

Firk, because that when children come to the yeares of difcretion, and have learned what their godfathers and godmothers promised for them in baptifme, they may then themselves with their own mouth, and with their own confent, openly before the church, ratifie and confirm the fame: & alfo promife that by the grace of God they will evermore endeavour themselves faithfully to obferve and keep fuch things as they by their own mouth & confeffion have affented unto. Secondly, forafmuch as confirmation is miniftred to them that be baptized, that by impofition of hands and prayer, they may receive ftrength and defence against all temptations to fine, and the affaults of the world and the devils it is most meet to be ministred when children come to that age, that partly by the frailty of their own fefb, partly by the affaults of the world and the devil, they begin to be in danger to fall into fundrie kindes of finne.

Thirdly, for that it is agreeable with the ufage of the church in times past whereby it was or dained that confirmation fhould be miniftred to them that were of perfect age, that they being inftrudled in Chrifls religion, fhould openly profeffe their own faith, and promife to be obedi ent unto the will of God.

And that no man fhall think that any detriment shall come to children by deferring of their confirmation,be fhall know for truth, that it is certain by Gods word, that children being baptized, have all things necessarie for their salvation, and be undoubtedly saved.

A Catechifme, that is to say, An inftruction to be learned of every childe,
before he be brought to be confirmed by the bishop.

Doft thou not think that thou art bound to beleeve, and to do as they have promised for thee?

Thou shalt not make to thy felf any graven image, nor the likeneffe of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth be neath, or in the water under the earth. Thou fhalt not bowe down to them, nor worthip them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and vifit the finnes of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercie unto thousands in them that love me,and keep my commandments.

IIII. Remember that thou keep holy the fabbath-day. Six dayes fhalt thou labour, and do all that thou haft to do;but the feventh day. is the fabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou fhalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy fonne, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy maid-fervant, thy cattell, and the ftranger that is within thy gates: for in fix dayes the Lord made heaven and earth, the fea, and all that in them is, and refted the feventh day: wherefore the Lord bleffed the feventh day, and hallowed it.

What doft thou chiefly learn by these commandments?

Answer.

[blocks in formation]

My duty towards my neighbour, is to love him as my felf, & to do to all men as I would they fhould do unto me. To love, honour, and fuccour my father and mother. To honour and obey the king and his minifters. To fubmit my felf to all my governours, teachers, spirituall paftours, and mafters. To order my felf lowly. and reverently to all my betters. To hurt no body by word nor deed. To be true and just in all my dealing. To bear no malice nor hatred in my heart. To keep my hands from picking and ftealing, and my tongue from evil speaking, lying, and flandering. To keep my body in temperance, foberneffe, and chastitie. Not to covet nor defire other mens goods, but to learn and labour truly to get mine own living, and to do my duty in that ftate of life, unto the which it fhall please God to call me. Question.

My good childe, know this, that thou art not able to do these things of thy felf, nor to walk in the commandments of God, and to ferve him, without his fpeciall grace, which thou must learn at all times to call for by diligent prayer. Let me heat therefore if thou canft lay the Lords prayer.

What defireft thou of God in this prayer?
Answer.

I defire my Lord God our heavenly Fa ther, who is the giver of all goodneffe, to fend his grace unto me, and to all people, that we may worship him, ferve him, and obey him as we ought to do. And I pray unto God, that he will fend us all things that be needfull both for our fouls and bodies. And that he will be
