PREFACE.

THE People's Edition of the Methodist Hymn
Book was published in 1853. Owing to its in-
trinsic excellence and moderate cost, it has met
with a very extensive sale. The selection of
Hymns at the close of the Book, designed for the
use of Young Persons, has rendered it an especial
favourite in Wesleyan Sunday Schools. These
Hymns were, however, necessarily limited in
number, and, therefore, to meet the wants of the
80,000 Scholars now connected with the separate
Societies, this Book has been prepared.

For the convenience of Teachers and Scholars
the School Collection and the larger Hymn Book
have been published in one Volume. To render
it as complete as possible, a list of those Hymns
in the People's Edition which are suitable for the
Young has been prepared, and will be found in a
separate Index on page 728 of the Large Book.
The School Hymn Book is also published in a
separate form.

The utmost care has been taken in the prepara-
tion of this Hymn Book, and in addition to the
Hymns of a decidedly religious character, a valu-
able selection of Moral Pieces will be found at
the close. These it is hoped will be admirably
adapted for the Day School and the Home Circle.
