JUDICA me Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sanctâ; ab homine iniquo et doloso

erue me.

R. Quia tu es, Deus, fortitudo mea, quare me repulisti? Et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

P. Emitte lucem tuam, et veritatem tuam; ipsa me deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum et in tabernacula tua.

R. Et introibo ad altare Dei; ad Deum qui lætificat juventutem meam.

P. Confitebor tibi in citharâ, Deus, Deus me

JUDGE me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; from the unjust and deceitful man deliver me.

R. Since thou, O God, art my strength, why hast thou cast me off? And why do I go sorrowful, while the enemy afflicteth me?

P. Send forth thy light and thy truth; they have conducted me, and brought me to thy holy mount, and into thy tabernacles.

R. And I will go unto the altar of God; to God who giveth joy to my youth.

P. I will praise thee on the hary, O God, my

DEVOTIONS FOR MASS.

IN the name of the

Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

At the beginning of the Mass the Priest, at the foot of the altar makes the sign of the cross, saying, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen; and then recites with the clerk the 42d Psalm, "Judica me, Deus, &c., Judge me, O God," which you may either recite with him, or pray as follows:

A Prayer at the beginning of the Mass.

O almighty Lord of heaven and earth, behold I, a wretched sinner, presume to appear before thee this day, to offer up to thee by the hands of our High-Priest, Jesus Christ, thy Son, the sacrifice of his Body and Blood, in union with the sacrifice which he offered to thee upon the cross; first, for thine own honour, praise, adoration, and glory; secondly, in remembrance of his death and passion; thirdly, in thanksgiving for all thy blessings bestowed on thy whole Church, whether triumphant in heaven or militant on earth, and especially for those bestowed on me, the most unworthy of all; fourthly, for obtaining pardon and remission of all my sins, and for those of all others, whether living or dead, for whom I ought to pray; and lastly, for obtaining all graces and blessings both for myself and thy whole Church. O, be thou

us; quare tristis es, anima mea, et quare conturbas me?

R. Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor illi, salutare vultûs mei, et Deus meus.

et

P. Gloria Patri, Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.

R. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

P. Introibo ad altare Dei.

R. Ad Deum qui lætificat juventutem meam. P. Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini. R. Qui fecit cœlum et terram.

P. Confiteor, &c.

R. Misereatur tui omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam æternam.

P. Amen.

R. Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatæ Mariæ semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Joanni Baptista, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus sanctis, et tibi Pater, quia pecca

God; why art thou sad, O my soul, and why dost thou disquiet me?

R. Hope in God, for I will still praise him, the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

P. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. P. I will go unto the altar of God.

R. To God who giveth joy to my youth.

P. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.

P. I confess, &c.

R. May almighty God be merciful to thee, and, forgiving thy sins, bring thee to everlasting life. P. Amen.

R. I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the saints, and to you, Father, that

pleased to assist me by thy grace, that I may behave myself this day as I ought to do in thy divine presence, and that I may so commemorate the death and passion of thy Son, as to partake most plentifully of the fruits thereof. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I believe, O my God, that in this sacrifice of the Mass is renewed that sacrifice which Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross. I believe that this renewal is made for the exaltation of thy holy name, for the sanctification of the just, and for the conversion of sinners. Father of mercy, purify my heart, that I may worthily present myself at this holocaust of thy immaculate Lamb. Far from me be every earthly thought, now that I am assisting at the greatest work of thy infinite goodness and mercy. Blessed Mary, my dearest Mother, obtain for me the grace of assisting at this holy rite with sentiments of piety and devotion, similar to those with which thou wert impressed during thy sorrowful attendance at the sacrifice on the cross of thy most beloved Son. Obtain for me a large share of the graces which are ever imparted to those who devoutly assist at this tremendous sacrifice,
