It appears from a comparison of 1 Chron. xxiv. 19, with chap. ix. 27, and with 2 Chron. xxiii. 8, and 2 Kings, xi. 5-7, that these courses of the Priests were weekly, or of seven days each, and began and ended on the Sabbath." Parkhurst.

24 And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she concealed herself five months, saying, 25" The Lord hath thus dealt with me, in the days wherein he hath looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.”

26 AND in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God, to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin espoused to a_man_named Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel coming to her, said, “Hail, highly favoured virgin: the Lord be with thee: [blessed art thou among women."]

29 And she was much troubled at his saying, and considered what kind of salutation this could be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And behold, thou shalt conceive and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called a Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of his father David: 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end."

13 But the angel said to him, "Fear not, Zachariah: for thy prayer hath been heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness ; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with a holy spirit, | even from his birth. 16 And many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God. 17 More over he shall go before them, in the sight of God,* with the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the disobedient by the wisdom of the righteous; to make ready for the Lord a prepared people."

18 And Zachariah said to the angel, "By what shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years. 19 And the angel answering, said to him, "I am Ga. briel, who attend in the presence of God; and I am sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day in which these things will be performed; because thou hast not believed my words; which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21 Now the people were expecting Zachariah, and wonder. ed that he tarried so long in the gel, "How can this be, since I

46 Then Mary said, "My soul magnifieth the Lord; 47 and my spirit rejoiceth greatly in God, my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the humble state of his servant: for, behold, hence

57 NOW Elizabeth's full time came, that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord had shown her great kindness; and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and would have called him Zachariah, after the name of his father. 60 But his mother speaking, said, “Not so; but he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, " There is no one among thy kindred called by this name.

62 Then they made signs to his father, how he would have him named. 63 And he beckoned for a writing-tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John." And all wondered. 64 And forthwith his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and blessed God. 65 And fear came

them and all these things were reported throughout all the mountainous country of Judea. 66 And all those that heard them, laid them up in their hearts, saying," What kind of child will this be?" And the hand of the Lord was with him.

80 And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his public appearance to Israel.

CH. II. 1 NOW it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the earth* should be enrolled. 2 (This was the first enrolment of Cyrenius, afterward governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be enrolled, every one to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and family of David,) 5 to be enrolled with Mary, his espoused wife, then great with child.

6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her first-born son, and swathed him, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
