way of God in truth, and carest for no one for thou regardest not the person of men. 17 Tell us, therefore, what thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not?" 18 But Jesus perceiving their maliciousness, said, "Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? 19 Show me the tribute-money." And they brought to him a denarius. 20 And he said to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" 21 They said to him "Cesar's." Then said he to them, "Render therefore the things of Cesar, to Cesar; and the things of God, to God." 22 And hearing this, they wonderand leaving him, they went

31" But concerning the resurrection of the dead, Have ye not read that which God spake to you, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?' God is not a God of the dead, but of the living." 33 And the multitudes hearing this, were amazed at his doctrine.

34 BUT the Pharisees, on hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, flocked about him. 35 Then one of them, a teacher of the law, asked him a question, trying him, and saying, 36" Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 And Jesus said to him, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.' 38 This is the first and great commandment. 29 And the

second is like it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.' 40 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."

23 ON that day, the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and asked him, saying, "Teacher, Moses hath commanded, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up offspring to his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first having married, died: 41 NOW while the Phari and, having no offspring, left sees were gathered together, his wife to his brother. 26 In Jesus asked them, 42 saying, like manner the second also," What think ye of Christ? and the third, to the seven. 27 And last of all, the woman died also. 28 At the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? for they all had her." 29 Then Jesus answering, said to them, "Ye err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection, they neither marry, nor are given in mar

They answered, "David's." 43 He said to them, "How then doth David, by the spirit, call him Lord, saying, 44 Jehovah said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool ? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son ?" 46 And no one was able to answer him a word; nor durst

CH. XXIII. 1 THEN Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples, 2 saying, "The Scribes and Pharisees sit in the seat of Moses, 3 all things therefore, whatsoever they command you [to observe], observe and do; but do not according to their works: for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens, [and hard to be borne,] and lay them on the 16"Alas for you, ye blind shoulders of men: but they guides! who say, Whosoever themselves will not move them shall swear by the temple, it is with their own finger. 5 And nothing; but whosoever shall all their works they do in order swear by the gold of the temto be seen by men; and they ple, he is bound by his oath.' make broad their phylacteries, 17 Ye fools, and blind! for and enlarge the borders [of their which is greater; the gold, or garments], and love the chief the temple which sanctifieth place at feasts, and the chief the gold? 18 And, 'Whososeats in the synagogues, 7 and ever shall swear by the altar, salutations in the market-places, it is nothing but whosoever and to be called by men, Rabbi, shall swear by the gift that is [Rabbi]. 8 But be not ye called upon it, he is bound by his Rabbi: for one is your Leader; oath.' 19 Ye [fools, and] blind! and all ye are brethren. 9 And for which is greater; the gift, call not any man your Father or the altar which sanctifieth upon earth: for one is your Fa- the gift? 20 He therefore who ther, even he that is in heaven. sweareth by the altar, sweareth 10 Nor be ye called Leaders: by it, and by all things thereon. for one is your Leader, even 21 And he who sweareth by the Christ. 11 But he that is the temple, sweareth by it and greatest among you, shall be by Him who dwelleth therein. your servant. 12 And whosoever 22 And he who sweareth by shall exalt himself, shall be heaven, sweareth by the throne humbled; and whosoever shall of God, and by Him who sitteth humble himself, shall be ex- thereon. alted.

29" Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the righteous; 30 and say,' If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' 31 Wherefore ye bear witness to yourselves, that ye are the sons of those who slew the prophets. 32 Fill ye up therefore the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents! ye brood of vipers! how can ye escape the punishment of Gehenna? 34 Wherefore, behold, I send to you prophets,

CH. XXIV. 1 AND Jesus, on going out, departed from the temple: and his disciples came to show him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, "See ye [not] all these things? Verily I tell you, There will not be left here, one stone upon another, which will not be thrown down."

3 And as he was sitting on the mount of Olives, the disciples came to him, privately, saying, "Tell us, when will

9 "Then will they deliver you up to affliction, and will kill you; and ye will be hated by all nations because of my name. 10 And then many will fall away, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and will deceive many. 12 And because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will become cold: 13 but whosoever endureth to the end, he shall be preserved. 14 And these glad tidings of the reign will be preached in all the world, for a witness to all nations; and then the end will come.

23" Then if any one say to you, 'Lo! here is the Christ, or there;' believe not. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will propose great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if it were possible, even the chosen. 25 Lo! I have foretold you this. 26 Wherefore, if they say to you, Behold, he is in the desert;' go not forth : Behold, he is in the secret chambers ;' believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth to the west; so [also] will be the coming of the Son of man. 28 [For] wheresoever the carcase is, there the eagles will be gathered together.

29" Now, soon after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give her light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then will ap

pear the sign of the Son of man, in heaven; and then will all the tribes of the land lament, and will see the Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven, with great power and glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet; and they will gather together his chosen, from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32" But learn a parable from the fig-tree: When its branch is now tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: 33 so likewise, when ye see all these things, know ye that the Son of man is near, even at the door. 34 Verily I tell you, This generation will not pass away till all these things be accomplished. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away; but my words cannot pass away.
