EDITED BY THE REV. JOSEPH S. EXELL, M.A., Joint-Editor of the Pulpit Commentary.

THE MONTHLY INTERPRETER.

Then said the Interpreter, Come in; I will show
thee that which will be profitable to thee.'

-JOHN BUNYAN.

THE
HE age in which we live is essentially one of Biblical study and Theological inquiry.
Antiquity and tradition no longer compel a blind assent; men rightly make their
own creeds and search the Scriptures for themselves.

We believe that intellectual inquiry is inherently healthful, and beneficial in result. It gives interest to research, discipline to the faculties, reality to revelation, and intensity to belief. Truth has nothing to fear from investigation, it has from timidity and concealment. Earnest inquiry and a candid recognition of the forms of unbelief are preferable to an indifferent acceptance of the truth.

But inquiry must be answered, and wisely directed, if it is to be saved from irreverence, despair, or unreasonable demands. It is evident that the pulpit cannot undertake this task, its work is spiritual and aggressive; moreover it cannot often place the Christianity it should advocate on the defensive. The sanctuary may not be turned into an arena of conflicting theories. Nor can books adequately direct the inquiries of anxious minds. Few men have the leisure to write, or the adventure to publish them. And if written, the world is too busy to study them.

We believe that a Magazine, well conducted, can best meet the requirements of the case. This provides a legitimate arena for discussion, an inexpensive mode of publication for able writers; it can readily reflect the frequent changes of opinion; it can, where desirable, permit anonymous expression of tentative or speculative views; and is, moreover, commended by brevity to these busy times.

Such a service it will be the aim of THE MONTHLY INTERPRETER to render,-to guide the BIBLICAL, THEOLOGICAL, SCIENTIFIC, PHILOSOPHICAL, and SOCIAL thinkings of the day. The ablest scholars of Britain, America, and the Continent will contribute to its pages. Open discussion of topics will be permitted, free from sectarian spirit, within reverent and reasonable limitations. Its articles will be practical as well as learned; not hyper-scholastic, or unduly technical; adapted to the lay reader as well as to the professional student.

The following list of Contributors will show the high-class nature of the Magazine :
