אֶת־הַיְלָדִים עַל־לֵאָה וְעַל־רָחֵל וְעַל שְׁתֵּי הַשְׁפָחוֹת : 2 וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת־הַשְׁפָחָוֹת וְאֶת־יַלְדֵיהֶן רָאשֹׁנָה וְאֶת־לֵאָה וילדיהָ אַחֲרֹנִים וְאֶת־־רָחֵל וְאֶת־־יוֹסֵף אַחֲרֹנִים

וְהוּא עָבַר לִפְנֵיהֶם וַיִשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים

עַד־גְשְׁתּוֹ עַד־אָחִיו : 4 וַיָּרָץ עֵשָׂו לִקְרָאתוֹ וַיְחַבְּקֵהוּ צואריו ק' וַיִפּל עַל־־צַנָּארֶוֹ וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ וַיִּבְכּוּ : 5 וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת־עֵינָיו טוקיו וַיַּרְא אֶת־הַנָּשִׁים וְאֶת־הַיְלָדִים וַיֹּאמֶר מִי־אֵלֶה לָּךְ

ויאמר הילדים אֲשֶׁר־־חָנן אֱלֹהִים אֶת־־עַבְרֶךְ : רביעי 6 וַתִּגְשָׁן הַשְׁפָחָוֹת הֵנָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶן וַתִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶן: 7 וַתִּגְש

גם־־לֵאָה וִילָדֶיהָ וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ וְאַחַר נִגַּשׁ יוֹסֶף וְרָחֵל וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ : 8 וַיֹּאמֶר מִי לְךָ כָּל־הַמַּחֲנֶה הַוּה אֲשֶׁר פנשְׁתִּי וַיֹּאמֶר לִמְלֹא־־חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי : 9 וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו

לי, רֶב אָחִי יְהִי לְךְ אֲשֶׁר־לָךְ: 10 וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקב אל־־נָא אִם־־נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינִיךְ וְלָקַחְתָּ מִנְחָתי מִיָּדִי כִּי עַל־כֵּן רָאִיתִי פָנֶיךְ כִּרְאָת פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים וַתִּרְצֵנִי: 11 קַח-נָא אֶת־בִּרְכָתִי אֲשֶׁר הָבָאת לָךְ כִּי־ חַנַּנִי אֱלֹהִים וְכִי יֶשׁ־לִי־כָל וַיִּפְצַר־בּוֹ וַיִּקְח: 12 וַיֹּאמֶר נִסְעֶה וְנֵלֵכָה וְאֵלְכָה לְנֶגְדִּךְ 13 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲדנִי ידע כִּי־הַיְלָדִים רַבִּים וְהַצְאן וְהַבָּקָר עֶלְוֹת עָלַי וּדְפָקוּם יוֹם אֶחָד וָמֵתוּ כָּל־הַצְאָן : 14 יַעֲבָר־נָא אֲדֹנִי לִפְנֵ עבְדוֹ וַאֲנִי אֶתְנַחֲלָה לְאִמִּי לְרֶגֶל הַמְלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר לְפָנַי וּלְרֶגֶל הַיְלָדִים עַד אֲשֶׁר־אָבִא אֶל־אֲדֹנִי שֵׂעִירָה 15 וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂר אַבִּינָה־נָא עֶמְךְ מִן־הָעָם אֲשֶׁר אִתּ וַיֹּאמֶר לָמָּה זֶּה אֶמְצָא־חֵן בְּעֵינֵי אֲדֹנִי : 16 וַיָּשָׁ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, עֵשָׂו לְדַרְכּוֹ שֵׁעֶירָה: 17 וַעֲקב נָס סכֹּתָה וַבְן לִי בֵּית וּלְמִקְנֵהוּ עֶשֶׂה סְכֹּת על־כֵּן קָר שֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹם סְכּוֹת : ס 18 וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקב שָׁלֵם עִי שְׁכֶם אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ כְּמַעַן בְּבאוֹ מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם וַיִחַן אֶר פְנֵי הָעִיר : 19 וַיִּקֶן אֶת־חֶלְקַת הַשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר נָטָד

שָׂא פָנָן : 21 וַתַּעַבְר הַמִּנְחָה עַל־פָּנָיו וְהוּא לָן בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא בַּמַחִנה : 2 וַיָּקָם בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא וַיַּקַח אֶת־שְׁתֵּי נָשָׁיו וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּי שִׁפְחֹתָיו וְאֶת־אַחַד עָשָׂר יְלָדָיו וַיַּעֲבֹר אֵת מַעֲבַר יַבּק: 23 וַיִּקָחֵם וַיַּעֲבִרֵם אֶת־הַנָּחַל וַוּעָבַר אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ : 24 וַיִּוָּתֵר יַעֲקֹב לְבַדּוֹ, וַיֵּאָבֵק אִישׁ עָבֹוֹ עָר עַלות הַשָּׁחַר: 25 וַיַּרְא כִּי לֹא יָכֹל לוֹ וַיִּגַּע בְּכַף־יְרֵכוֹ וַתֵּקַע כַּף-יֶרֶךְ יַעֲקֹב בְּהֵאָבְקוֹ עִמּוֹ : 26 וַיֹּאמֶר שַׁלְחֵנִי כִּי עָלֶה הַשָׁחַר וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא אֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ כִּי אִם־בְּרַכְתָּנִי : 27 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מַה־שְׁמֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר יְעַקְב : 28 וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא יַעֲקב יֵאָמֵר עוֹד שְׁמָךְ כִּי אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי־שָׂרָית עם־־אֱלֹהִים וְעִם־־אֲנָשִׁים וַתּוּכָל : 29 וַיִּשְׁאַל יעקב

וַיֹּאמֶר הַגִּידָה־נָּא שְׁמֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר לָמָה זֶה תִּשְׁאַל לִשְׁמִי שלישי וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתוֹ שָׁם : 30 וַיִּקְרָא יַעֲקֹב שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם פְּנִיאֵל כִּי־רָאִיתִי אֱלֹהִים פָּנִים אֶל־פָּנִים וַתִּנָּצֵל נַפְשִׁי

וַיִּזְרַח־־לוֹ הַשָּׁמֶשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר עָבַר אֶת־פְּנוּאֵל וְהוּא צלִע על-יְרֵכוֹ : 32 עַל־כֵּן לֹא־יֹאכְלוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָ אֶת

* Tuo little is said of this circumstance to admit of any conjectures on the nature of their appearance. I am inclined to think it was a vision in the night.

Ø That is, two hosts, or camps. # He here informs him of the reason of his not visiting him before, and which was owing to his long stay with Laban, whither he had been sent by his parents ; but that as soon as he had left him, he took the first opportunity to wait on him,

|| On being informed that Esau was coming with four hundred men, he did not doubt, but that his intention was hostile; and that enmity still lurked within his breast.

Here Jacob confesses the fear or his unworthiness of the great mercies of Gud ; and thinks, that he has not served him in such a manner, as to be deserving of all which he did for him : and there fore prays

to be delivered from Esau. ** With the utmost gratitude the Patriarch acknowledges, that all he now possessed was given him by the favour of the Almighty. I had nothing, said he, but a single staff in my hand when I came from my father's house, and I am now returned loaded with riches ! Do thou, O God! who hast thus enlarged me, deliver me from my brother's resentment,

הָאֹמַר אֵלַי שׁוּב לְאַרְצְךָ וּלְמְוֹלַדְתְּךָ וְאֵיטִיבָה עִמָּךְ : 10 קָטַנְתִּי מִכָּל הַחֲסָדִים וּמִכָּל־הָאָמת עָשִׂיתָ אֶת־עַבְדְּךָ כִּי בְמַקְלִי עָבַרְתִּי אֶת־הַיַּרְבֵּן הַזֶּה וְעַתָּה הָיִיתִי לִשְׁנֵי מַחֲנָוֹת : 11 הַצִילֵנִי נָא מִיַּד אָחִי מִיד עֵשָׂו כִּי־יֶרֶא אָנֹכִי אֹתוֹ פֶּן־יָבוֹא וְהִכֵּנִי אֵם

בָּנִים : 12 וְאַתָּה אָמַרְתָּ הֵיטֵב אֵיטִיב עִמָּךְ וְשַׂמְתִּי שני אֶת־זַרְעֲךָ כְּחוֹל הַיָּם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב : 13 וַיָּלֶן

שָׁם בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא וַיְקַח מִן־הַבָּא בְיָדֶוֹ מִנְחָה לְעֵשָׂו אָחִיו : 14 עַזִים מָאתַיִם וּתְיָשִׁים עֶשְׂרִים רְחֵלִים מָאתַיִם וְאֵילִים עֶשְׂרִים : 15 גְמַלִּים מֵינִיקוֹת וּבְנֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשִׁים פַּרְוֹת אַרְבָּעִים וּפָרִים עֲשָׂרָה אֵתנת עֶשְׂרִים וַעֲיָרֶם עֲשָׂרָה: 16 וַיִּתֵּן בְּיַד־־עֲבָדָיו עֶדֶר עֵדֶר לְבַדּוֹ
