אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אִם־יֶשְׁךְ־נָא מַצְלִיחַ דַּרְכִּי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי הלֵךְ עָלֶיהָ: 43 הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי נִצָּב עַל־עֵין הַמָּיִם וְהָיָה הָעַלְמָה הַיֹּצֵאת לִשְׁאֹב וְאָמַרְתִּי אֵלֶיהָ הַשְׁקִינִי־נָא מְעַט־מַיִם מִכַּדִּךְ 44 וְאָמְרָה אֵלַי גַם־אַתָּה שְׁתֵה וְגַם לִגְמַלֶיךָ אֶשְׁאָב הִוא הָאִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר־הָכִיחַ יְהוָה לְבֶן־אֲדֹנִי: 45 אֲנִי טרם אֲכַלָּה לְדַבֵּר אֶל־לִבִּי וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה

יצאת וְכַבֶּה על־שְׁכְמָהּ וַתֵּרֶד הָעַיְנָה וַתִּשְׁאָב ז וָאֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ הַשְׁקִינִי נָא : 46 וַתְּמַהֵר וַתּוֹרֵד בַּדָּה מעֲלִיהָ וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁתֵה וְגַם־גְמַלֵּיךְ אַשְׁקֶה וָאֶשְׁתְּ וְגַם הַגְּמַלִים הִשְׁקָתָה : 47 וְאֶשְׁאַל אֶתָה וָאֹמַר בַּת־מִי אַת וַתֹּאמֶר בַּת־בְּתוּאֵל בֶּן־נָחוֹר אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה־לו מַלְכָּה וָאָשָׁם הַנָּיִם עַל־אַפֶּה וְהָצְמִידִים עַל־יָדֶיהָ:

וְאֵלֶּד וָאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לַיהוָה וַאֲבָרֵךְ אֶת־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר הִנְחַנִי בְּדֶרֶךְ אֱמֶת לַקְחַת אֶת־ בַּת־אֲחִי אֲדֹנִי לִבְנוֹ: 49 וְעַתָּה אִם־יֶשְׁכֶם עשים חֶסֶד ואמת אֶת־אֲדֹנִי הַגִּידוּ לִי וְאִם־לֹא הַגִּידוּ לִי וְאֶפְנֶה עַל־יָמִין אוֹ עַל־שְׂמְאל: 50 ויען לָבֶן וּבְתוּאֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ

מֵיהוָה יָצָא הַדָּבָר לֹא נוּכַל דַּבֵּר אֵלֶיךְ רַע אוֹרטְוֹב: ו 51 הִנֵּה־רִבְקָה לְפָנֶיךָ קַח וָלֵךְ וּתְהִי אִשָּׁה לְבֶן־אֲדֹנִיךְ

כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה: 52 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם חמישי אֶת־דִּבְרֵיהֶם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה לַיהוָה: 53 וַיּוֹצֵא הָעֶבֶד

בְּלִי־כָסֶף וּכְלֵי זָהָב וּבְגָדִים וַיִּתֵּן לְרִבְקָה וּמִנְהֶלֶת נָתַן לְאָחִיהָ וּלְאִמָּה : 54 וַיֹּאכְלְוּ וַיִּשְׁתּוּ הָוּא וְהָאֲנָשִׁים

אֲשֶׁר־עַמּוֹ וַיָּלֵינוּ וַיָּקוּמוּ בַבּקֶר וַיֹּאמֶר שַׁלְחָנִי לַאדֹנִי ; הנערה 55 וַיֹּאמֶר אָחִיהָ וְאִמָּה תֵּשֶׁב הַנַּעַר אִתָּנוּ יָמִים אוֹ

עָשׂוֹר אַחַר תֵּלֶךְ: 56 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם אַל־תְּאַחֲרָוּ אֹתִי

וַיְהוָה הִצְלִיחַ דַּרְכִּי שַׁלְהוּנִי וְאֵלְכָה לַאדֹנִי: 57 וַיֹּאמְרוּ לנערה נִקְרָא לָנער וְנִשְׁאֲלָה אֶת־פֶּיהָ : 58 וַיִּקְרְאוּ לְרַבְקָה

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלֶיהָ הֲתֵלְכִי עִם־הָאִישׁ הַזֶּה וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלֵךְ :

Ø As he perceived that God's blessing attended him in this affair, he would not suffer any thing to divert him from his master's service, till he had finished it And, here we may observe another instance of God's blessing bestowed on Abraham, in giving him such a faithful servant.

# For as he had been speaking in praise of Abraham's riches, and that he had bestowed all those on Isaac; he wisely judged, that they might have doubted the truth of what he had said, by oliserving to him, that if the case was as he had stated it, why had he not gotten a wife for his son ere now as he undoubtedly might, if so rich and honourable: for this reason he observed, my master made me swear, that I should not take a wife for his son of the nations among whom he dwelt: for had he been so inclined, he might have had the most honourable of them, as every one was ambitious of his alliance; but he would by no means marry his son to any, but such as were of his own kindred.

|| This expression signifies, that in all his actions he was careful to act in such a manner, as if he was continually under the eye of the Supreme Being, from whum nothing is hid.

וַאֲמִתּוֹ מֵעָם אֲדֹנָי אָנֹכִי בַּדֶּרֶךְ נָחַנִי יְהוָה בֵּית אֲחֵי הנערה אֲדֹנִי : 28 וַתָּרָץ הַנַּעַר וַתַּגֵּד לְבֵית אִמָּהּ כַּדְּבָרִים

הָאֵלֶה: 29 וּלְרִבְקָה אָח וּשְׁמוֹ לָבָן וַיָּרָץ לָבָן אֶל־הָאִישׁ הַחוּצָה אֶל־הָעָן

הָעֶיִן : 30 וַיְהִי כִּרְאֹת אֶת־הַנֶדֶם וְאֶת־ הַצְמִדִים עַל־יְדֵי אֲחתּוֹ וּכְשָׁמְשׁ אֶת־דִּבְרֵי רִבְקָה אֲחֹתוֹ לֵאמֹר כֹּה־דְבֶּר אֵלַי הָאִישׁ וַיָּבֹא אֶל־הָאִישׁ הִנֵּה עֹמֵד עַל־הַגְּמַלִּים עַל־הָעֶיִן : 31 וַיֹּאמֶר בְּוֹא בְּרִיךְ יְתָה לָמָּה תַעֲמֹד בַּחוּץ וְאָנֹכִי פְנִיתִי הַבַּיִת וּמָקוֹם לַגְמַלִים : 32 32 וַיָּבֵא, הָאִישׁ הַבַּיְתָה וַיְפַתְּח

הַגְּמַלִּים וַיִּתֵּן תֵּבֵן וּמִסְפּוֹא לַגְמַלִים וּמַיִם לִרְחֹץ רַגְלָיו יישם וְרַגְלֵי הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ : 38 וַיִּישָׁם לְפָנָיוֹ לֶאֱכל

וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא אֹכַל עֶר אִם־דִּבַּרְתִּי דְבָרָי וַיֹּאמֶר הַבַּךְ : 34 וַיֹּאמַר עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם, אֶנְכִי : 35 וַיהוָה בַּרָךְ אֶת־ אֲדֹנָי מְאֹד וַיִּנְדֶל וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ צאן וּבָקָר וְכֶסֶף וְזָהָב יַעֲבָדִם וּשְׁפָחֹת וּנְמַלִים וַחֲמֹרִים: 36 וַתֵּלֶד שָׂרָה אֵשֶׁת אֲדֹנִי בֶן לַאדֹנִי אַחֲרֵי זִקְנָתָה וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לו : 37 וַיִּשְׁבַּעֲנִי אֲדֹנִי לֶאמֶר לֹא־תְקַח אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִבְּנוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי יְשֵׁב בְּאַרְצְוֹ : 38 אִם־־לָא אֶל־ בֵּית־אָבִי תֵּלֵךְ וְאֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשֶׁה לִבְנֵי :

וָאֹמַר אֶל־אֲדנִי אֵלַי לֹא־תֵלֵךְ הָאִשָּׁה אַחֲרי : 40, וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָי יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר־הִתְהַלָּכְתִּי לְפָנָיו יִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכָוֹ אִתָּךְ וְהִצְלִיחַ דַּרְכֵּךְ וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּי וּמִבֵּית אָבִי : 41 אָז תִּנָּקָה מֵאָלָתִי כִּי תבוא אֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי וְאִם־לָא יִתְּנוּ לָךְ וְהָיִיתָ נָקִי מֵאָלָתִי : 42 וָאָלֹא הַיוֹם אֶל־הָעֶיִן וָאֹמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי

* This old man seems to bave been Eliezer, who was mentioned, in chap. XV. verse 2, whose eldership in dignity and trust is possibly meant, rather than in years.,

# It is not to be presumed that he put his trust in this divination, if it may be so called, but rather trusted to what his njaster said in verse 7. הָעֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָה גְמַלִּים מִגְמַלֵּי אֲדֹנָיו וַיֵּלֶךְ וְכָל־טוב אֲדֹנָיו בְּיָדְוֹ וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־אֲרָם נַהֲרַיִם אֶל־עיר נָחוֹר : ו וַבְרָךְ הַגְּמַלִּים מִחוּץ לָעִיר אֶל־בְּאֵר הַמָּיִם לְעֵת עֶרֶב לְעֵת צֵאת הַשְׁאֲבָת: 12 וַיֹּאמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם הַקְרֵה נָא לְפָנַי הַיוֹם יַעֲשֶׂה חֶסֶד עִם אֲדֹנִי אָבְרָהָם :

13 הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי נְצָב עַל-עֵין הַמָּיִם וּבְשׂוֹת אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר הנערה יֹצְאֵת לִשְׁאֹב מָיִם : 14 וְהָיָה הַנַּעַר אֲשֶׁר אֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ

הַמִּי־נָא כַדִּךְ וְאֶשְׁתֶּה וְאָמְרָה שְׁתֵה וְגַם־גְּמַלֶךְ אַשְׁקֶה אֹתָה הוֹכַחְתָּ לְעַבְדְּךָ לְיִצְחָק וּבָה אֵדַע כִּי־עָשִׂיתָ חֶל עִם־אֲנִי : 15 וַיְהִי־הוּא טֶרֶם כָּלֶה לְדַבֵּר וְהִנְף

רִבְקָה יֹצֵאת אֲשֶׁר יִלְדָה לִבְתוּאֵל בֶּן־מִלְכָּה אֵשֶׁת וחנערהנָחוֹר אֲחִי אַבְרָהָם וְכדָּהּ עַל־שָׁכְמָה : 16 וְהַפּער טבת

מַרְאֶה מְאֹד בְּתוּלָה וְאִישׁ לֹא יְדָעָה וַתִּרֶד הָעַיְנָה וַתְּמַלֵא כַדָּהּ וַתַּעַל : 17 וַיָּרֶץ הָעֶבֶד לִקְרָאתָה וַיֹּאמֶר הַנְמִיאִינִי נָא מְעַט־מַיִם מִכַּבֵּךְ : 18 וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁתֵה אֲדֹנָי וַתְּמַהֵר וַתָּרֶד כַּדָּהּ עַל־יָדָהּ וַתַּשְׁקֵהוּ: 19 וַתְּכַל לְהַשְׁקתּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר גַם לִגְמַלִיךְ אֶשְׁאָב עֶר אִם־כַּלְוּ לִשְׁתּת : 20 וַתְּמַהֵר וַתְּעֶר כַּדָּה אֶל־הַשׁקֶת וַתָּרָץ עוֹד אֶל־הַבְּאֵר לִשְׁאֹב וַתִּשְׁאַב לְכָל־גְּמַלָּיו : 21 וְהָאִישׁ לא : 22 וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר כַּלָּוּ הַגְמַלִיִם לִשְׁתוֹת וַיקח הָאִישׁ גֶזֶטָ זָהָב בְּקַע מִשְׁקָלִי וּשְׁנֵי צְמִידִים עַל־יָדִיהָ עֲשָׂרָה זָהָב מִשְׁקָלָם : 23 וַיֹּאמֶר בַּת־מִי אַתְּ הַגִידִי נָא היש בֵּית־אָבִיךְ מָקוֹם לָנוּ לָלִין : 24 וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו
