PREFACE.

"HITHERTO hath the LORD helped us," was the record of the venerable Samuel, as he elevated the stone to aid his retrospect of the triumphant progress of Israel. Thousands of pious individuals and of religious associations have made the same devout acknowledgment on surveying their past history; but none have had more just occasion to cherish the sentiment of the grateful prophet than the Agents and Directors of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society.

Divine goodness has largely showered down its blessings upon the several Agencies of the Society during the past year, as is abundantly manifest from the details in the PILOT; and that this Magazine itself has advanced in public estimation is clear, from its increased circulation.

In a periodical of so limited a size, designed especially for seamen, and to record the transactions of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, critical, elaborate, and profound literary articles, to a large extent, cannot be expected; still it is believed to contain papers which would adorn works of far higher pretensions. The greatest glory of the PILOT, however, is to detail the progress of operations designed to promote the evangelization of seamen : yet while it answers this important end, it is endeavoured to be made instructive for the domestic circle of landsmen; and while the PILOT OR SAILORS' MAGAZINE is the only periodical of the kind issuing from the British. press adapted for family reading, it is believed, that, in proportion as it is known, it will be patronized by all denominations of Christians.
