MONG all the paintings suggested by the "Divine Comedy» none perhaps is more fully inspired by Dante's own spirit than this by Holiday. It will be noticed that in the face of Beatrice he gives us a strong suggestion of Dante's own most pronounced characteristics. It is fairly inferible that he meaus to make her stand not only for "Heavenly Love » but for Dante's own ideal self.
