A New ENIGMA by Mr. CHARLES ROLT, Brom

Blameless myself, I bear another's Blame,
Shameless befides to hide another's Shame
Strip'd to the Skin, my Honour thrown afide,
I'm made the Inftrument of others Pride;
Not Holy Martyrs greater Pains befel,
When try'd they prov'd the utmost Rage of Hell
My Limbs cut off, my Head and Body torn,
I reft a Spectacle that none will mourn;
Then to my Help a skilful Surgeon flies,
Plaifters my Wound, and Ligatures applies;
Makes deep Incifions, healing Balíams pours,
And Life renew'd, to all it's Force restores.

A New ACROSTICK REBUS What most do partake of that live to be old, What found in the Sex Men precious do hold; A Thing that the Prop of our Lives does contain, And an Engine by which fome Hundreds are flain; With the Name of a City fam'd in the Eaft, And the Name of a Reptile that infefts Man and Beat, And a Creature that's often difh'd up at a Feast: These Initials when join'd will give you a Name, Of an innocent Man oft' hurt with ill Fame.

A New QUERE or Two.

If the Planets do not bias, or have no Force in human dies, (as many won't allow) what is the Occafion Children of the fame Parents do vary fo much in their Temper and are often quite oppofite in their natural Difpofition

Since Conftantine in the Air a Crofs beheld
Since Mahomet his Herefies impell'd

Since King Ethelflan at Malmb'ry was inter'd
The Normand Baftard to our Crown prefer'd
Since Fifteen Days continued here a Thunder
Since a Whore a Witch fill'd the French with Wonder

Since Men in Coaches here began to ride
Th' invenom'd Weed here in England try'd

Since Raleigh by Envy fell a Sacrifice.

Since a great Froft from whence our Corn
The Sun at 9 a frightful Mafk did wear
Since my great Friend Nicholas no more was feen,
And Hofpitality all fell with him

Since Men be-fh-t their Nofes with nafty Snuff,
None of thofe Apes will hearken to Reproof
Since that our Style was fet in better Light,
But fome thick-Sculs will ne'er conceive it right
Since Bing was shot 'cause he abhorred Fighting,
Whofe Death I once foretold in my Writing
Since Wars were o'er which Wealth us'd to augment,
Since Famine a greater Curfe among us fent,

By Tricks of Knavery, Jobbers do invent.

An Epigram on Snuff-Taking, Requested by fome Friends,

Can Men pretend to Reafon or good Sense,
When to their Brain they offer Violence;
To ape the Hottentots in Naftiness,

And fnuff up that which is abhori'd by Beaft
What's more abfurd to Men of fober thinking
Why is there found a Flowfhip in ftinking?
And you fine Women pray now don't you huff,
You can't be fweet and cleanly and take Snuff:
This for your Penance feveral have been wifhing,
That you might be depriv'd one half your K ffing;
If you'll perfift each Nofe to prostitute,
May no Night Duty Hufbands execute

A Lawyer found that acts an h neft Part,

Must be allow'd a Man of great Defert ;

That takes no Bribe, nor does a Thing that's wrong,
Nor fplits a Cafe, or fpins it out too long,
Such fhall be praised by my Pen and Tongue:

By fome 'tis faid in Earneft or in Jeft,

That Half a Sheep will all fuch Lawyers feaft;
