FIRST EDITION.

ALTHOUGH a formal Preface to a little volume of this nature would be inconsistent, yet something in the shape of an apology for its publication may not altogether be thought so by those persons who have already contributed to the Profession the result of their experience on the same subject; and who, from a combination of advantages, are apparently more competent to the task than the Author.

To Mr. DICKINSON, in particular, whose experience as a Magistrate and abilities as a Lawyer have been so long recognized, he wishes to disclaim every pretension of entering the list of competition; but, at the same time, confidently trusts it will be acknowledged, both by that gentleman and the Profession at large, that when Barristers engage their talents in the production of books of practice, they are apt to soar to the higher regions of science, and to overlook the more humble minutiæ of matters connected with the office of a Solicitor.

Therefore, an elaborate work from a barrister, intended as an instructor clericalis, with the auxiliary production of a solicitor, may conjointly afford every requisite information.

Perhaps Mr. DICKINSON's book is the only one in circulation, exclusively on the same subject; and considering the wide field now open for the circulation of books
