When the new century was ushered in the event was celebrated in San Francisco at a large banquet for men at the Merchants' Club. The Committee of Arrangements provided four addresses on "The Achievements of the Nineteenth Century." Dr. David Starr Jordan, President of Stanford University, was asked to speak on "The Greatest Scientific Discovery of the Nineteenth Century."
