After the dissolution of the duchy of Saxony in 1180, several disconnected parts in Westphalia fell to the archbishops of Cologne, to whom were also assigned the ducal rights which Henry the Lion possessed in those parts. It is only through the union of the "Grafschaft Arnsberg" and the "Landschaft zu Westfalen" in 1463 that the duchy of Westphalia became a political unit, which, while remaining an appanage of Cologne until 1803, was governed more or less independently of the archbishops by the "Landdrost und Räte." The kingdom of Westphalia comprised all the Prussian provinces as far east as the Elbe and extended south to Fulda and the Thuringian states; it also comprised the electorates of Hesse, Hanover, the duchy of Brunswick, etc. The province of Westphalia (1815-) includes the former duchy and various principalities, countships, etc., adjacent to the duchy.
