PROPHECIES ABOUT IT.

Isa. x, 9. Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

Isa. xvii, 3. The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.

Jer. xlix, 23, 24. Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings; they are faint-hearted: there is sorrow on the sea: it cannot be quiet. Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her,

as a woman in travail.

Amos 1, 3, 5. Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron. I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.

Amos v, 27. Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

Isa. xxiii, 1. The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them.

Isa. lx, 9. Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from

far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.

Jer. x, 9. Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

Ezek. xxvii, 12, 25. Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market; and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the inidst of the seas.

Ezek. xxxviii, 13. Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

Jonah 1, 8. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the

fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Jonah iv, 2. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying when I was yet in my country? therefore I fled before unto Tarshish.....

Isa. xxiii, 5, 8, 15, 17. As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre. Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
