from the registrar of the University an interim licence entitling him to practise during the period of one year from the said first day of March upon production by him. of evidence that he is a graduate of a school of chiropractic recognized by the Senate of the University as such.

(2) Any person who receives any such interim licence. on or before the first day of May shall not be deemed to have incurred any penalty for having theretofore practised without being registered under this Act. [1922, c. 56, s. 14.]

73. 74. (1) Any prosecution under this Act where a penalty Prosecutions is not provided may be brought and heard before a justice of the peace.

(2) In case the penalty and costs awarded are not upon conviction forthwith paid the justice may commit the offender to the common gaol there to be imprisoned for any term not exceeding one month unless the penalty and costs are sooner paid, and for a second offence a term not exceeding two months, and for a third offence a term of three months. 78. (1) Any person whose name has been added for registration to the register of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the North-West Territories between the date of the last examination held by the said College and the ninth day of May, one thousand nine hundred and six, shall, for the purposes of this Act, be deemed to be a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the North-West Territories within the Province of Alberta.

(2) In the event of the name of any such person not having been added to the register of the said College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Lieutenant Governor in Council may by Order cause such name to be added to the registry of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. CHAPTER 210.

An Act to incorporate the Graduate Nurses of
Alberta.

HIS

IS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Registered Nurses Act." [1916, c. 35, s. 1.]

Incorporation of Association.

2. The association heretofore constituted under the name of "Alberta Association of Registered Nurses, hereinafter called "the association," is hereby continued as a body corporate under the same name, and shall have perpetual succession, and a common seal (which it may at pleasure change), and may sue and be sued, contract and be contracted with, and may acquire by gift, purchase or otherwise, and may sell, mortgage, lease or otherwise dispose of real and personal property for the purpose of carrying into effect and of promoting the objects and designs of the said corporation, and may expend money in prosecuting violations of this Act, and may pass by-laws not inconsistent with this Act for the government and discipline of its members, the management of its property, the registration and admission of members, and all such purposes as may be deemed necessary for the management of the association, and the promotion of its welfare, and may issue registration certificates.

3.-(1) Every applicant for registration as a registered nurse pursuant to the provisions of this Act shall

(a) have received at least three years' training in medical, surgical and obstetrical work at a general hospital or hospitals recognized by the Senate of the University of Alberta;

(b) pass the qualifying examination hereinafter referred to;

(c) pay a fee of five dollars:

Provided that any applicant who was resident in Alberta. upon the eighteenth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and sixteen, and then possessed a certificate of graduation

from a hospital which provided for at least two years' training in medical, surgical and obstetrical work, need not further comply with the requirements of paragraph (a) or (b) of this subsection.

(2) Any person who is registered as a nurse under the law of any other province, state or country, may, upon payment of the proper fee, be registered without further examination if the Senate of the University of Alberta is satisfied that the standard of qualification for registration required therein, is at least equivalent to that required in Alberta. 4. The Senate of the University of Alberta shall—
(a) satisfy itself that any person entering upon a course
of hospital training leading to registration under
this Act, has passed the grade eight examination
of the Public School course of the Province or has
the equivalent educational standing;

(b) fix standards of training with regard to bed capa-
city, classes, lectures, and other factors making
for efficiency;

(c) refuse recognition to any hospital in which such
standards are not consistently observed;

(d) prescribe the subjects and scope of the qualifying
examination hereinbefore referred to and appoint
examiners to conduct the same. [1921, c. 18, s. 3.]

5. The affairs of the association shall be managed by a Council council (herein referred to as the council) consisting of seven members, all of whom shall be members of the association and who shall be elected every second year.
