the Reader will find that I have improved the

work in many other respects. I may therefore offer it to my Readers, with the same confidence of that favour and that patronage, which they have so liberally bestowed upon it since its first publication.

TO THE

SEVENTH EDITION.

THIS is the Seventh Edition of this Volume since the year 1841,-a tolerably convincing proof that it has acquired and enjoys the favourable opinion of the Magistracy and the Profession. The alterations and improvements made in the last edition of the work, were fully noticed in the Advertisement to that Edition, which the Reader will find in the next page, and to which I beg to refer him. In the present Edition, I have added all the Statutes since passed, and all the Cases since decided, on the subject of the Poor Law, down to the present time. I have inserted more fully and completely

then the several rules of the Poor Law Immssuners, defing the duties of Guardians, mersees, and other Poor Law Officers. Guardians f the Poor in Trions, not only at their board, but Domily, fnd it of material advantage to them to make themselves perfectly acquainted with these rules that they may correctly perform their 7w2 duties, and enforce the performance of the duties assed to the several officers under them; Overseers and Ecers acting under the Guardians, stvald be familiar with such parts of the Commissoccers rales, as reiste to their duties respectively, 1st they may incur no blame in respect of the maner in which they perform them. As to the Law of Settlement, the Poor Rate, Appeals against Rates and against Orders of Removal, I have laboured to render this work as correct and complete as I could; and I hope and trust that the Reader will be satisfied with it. The arrangement of the work is somewhat altered in the present Edition. It is now divided into five Parts:-1. The officers for the administration of the Poor Laws;-2. The Poor Rate;-3. Relief;-4. Settlement;-and 5 Removal. The part relating to Relief, also, been re-arranged and very much simplified last edition, so that the Reader may

glance, the different modes of Relief provided for the poor by law, and when, by whom, and how that relief is to be extended to them. I have spared no pains in doing all this effectually, as I conceived it to be a duty I owed to the Magistracy and the Profession to render this work as correct and complete as possible.
