The present Edition, the Eighth, of this favoured work, is urgently called for by the Publishers. It is not from any vanity that I call it a favoured work; but that a Legal work should have reached its eighth edition, in a comparatively short time, and in the life-time of its author, is at least a good test of the favour and estimation in which it is holden by those who commonly use it, namely, the Magistracy, the Profession, the Guardians of the Poor, and the Parish Officers. To enable it to sustain its character, -to ensure to it a continuance of this favour and estimation, -I have spared no pains in preparing the present Edition for publication. I have added all the cases decided, and the statutes enacted, since the last edition, and up to the present time; and
