In this volume, the author aims to render more familiar to the general reader, places which-in association with the great men and women of British history-cannot fail to be generally interesting. Her own visits to these English Shrines have been sources of deep and lasting enjoyment, and not without valuable instruction. If she succeed in sharing these advantages with others, she will have received her reward. To the pen and pencil of the author's excellent coadjutor, MR. F. W. FAIRHOLT, the reader will be largely indebted for much useful information concerning the subjects treated of in these pages. Several of the "Pilgrimages" have been published in the ARTJOURNAL; in that work they attracted attention; and the author has yielded to the wish of the publisher in collecting them into a Volume, which she hopes may be found not unworthy of public favour.
