376.-WEST RIDING AND GRIMSBY.

Incorporated by act of 6th August, 1862, to construct a line from the Bradford, Wakefield, and Leeds, at Wakefield, to the South Yorkshire, at Barnby-upon-Don, with a branch to Doncaster, and several minor branches. Length, 28 miles. Capital, 360,0007. in 10. shares and 120,0007. on loan. South Yorkshire and Sheffield appoint four directors, and guarantee interest on debentures, and a minimum dividend of 4 per cent. on share capital. Opened 1st January, 1866.

By act of 23rd June, 1864, the company was authorised to construct a station at Wakefield. Length of new line, mile. Capital (to be kept separate), 80,0007. in shares and 26,600/. on loan. West Yorkshire may contribute 15,0007. of this amount. Arrangements for the use of stations by Midland, West Yorkshire, and Manchester and Sheffield.

By act of 5th July, 1865, the company was authorised to construct a line from Keadby, on the South Yorkshire, to Lincoln, on the Great Northern. Length, 294 miles. Capital, 400,0007, in shares and 133,000. on loan. This act was repealed by act of 25th June, 1868. By another act of the same year, the West Riding and Grimsby was authorised to raise additional capital to the extent of 60,000/. in shares and 20,000. on loan.

By act of 28th June, 1866, the West Riding and Grimsby was transferred jointly to the Great Northern and the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire, the company to become extinct within one year from the passing of the act.

By act of 31st May, 1867, power was given to the Great Northern and the Sheffield, each to raise additional capital for the purposes of the Wakefield Station, to the extent of 20.0007., with 6,6007. on mortgage. Arrangements with Midland for use of Wakefield Station. By another act of the same year, the line was vested in the Great Northern and the Sheffield, ceasing to exist as an independent undertaking on 28th June, 1867. The West Riding and Grimsby is now worked jointly, and is managed by a committee of three directors from each of the two leasing companies. DIRECTORS:

377.-WEST SOMERSET.

Incorporated by act of 17th August, 1857, to construct a railway from the Bristol and Exeter, at Taunton, to the Harbour, at Watchet. Capital, 120,000/. in 107. shares ; loans, 40,000. Length, 14 miles. Broad gauge.

By act of 15th May, 1860, certain new works were authorised. Forfeited shares to be cancelled, and re-issued at 5 per cent. preference.

By Certificate of the Board of Trade, granted in 1866 and 1868, the company was authorised to issue 24,000l. new preference share capital. No further borrowing powers.

By arrangement, the Bristol and Exeter grants to the West Somerset an annuity or clear yearly rent-charge of the following amounts, viz:-For the year ended 31st December, 1871, 5,100.; 1872, 5,400; 1873, 5,7007; 1874, 6,000; 1875, 6,300l.; 1876, 6,600/.; and for every year for ever thereafter the amount to be 6,6007.

REVENUE. For the half-year ended 15th February, 1875, the full dividends were paid on all the preference shares, whilst for the half-year ended 15th August, the company was enabled to pay a dividend of 1s. 6d. per share, equal to 14 per cent. per annum, on the ordinary capital, with a surplus balance of 121. to carry to next half-year's account.

378.-WEST SOMERSET MINERAL.

Incorporated by act of 27th July, 1857, for making a railway from the Quay, at Watchet, to the parish of Exton, with a branch therefrom. Share capital under this act, 65,000., divided equally into A and B shares. Loan capital, 21,500., in substitution for which debenture stock was created and confirmed by act of 1869, and by the same act 8,500. due on bond was also authorised to be issued in debenture stock, making a total of 30,000l. By "The Watchet Harbour Act, 1860," the company was authorised to create, and they have created, 10,0007. of additional class B shares. By the West Somerset Mineral (Working Arrangements) Act, 1869, the company was authorised to borrow on mortgage or by debenture stock, a further sum of 8,5007.

This line is worked by the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron, and Coal Company Limited, for 55 years, from 24th June, 1864. That company guarantees interest on the mortgage debenture stock, as well as 6 per cent. on the 32,500l. A shares, and 5 per cent. on the 42,5007. B shares. This agreement was sanctioned by act of 24th June, 1869. In operation, 11 miles.

CAPITAL. The expenditure, including loan of 10,000l. to Watchet Harbour, amounted, on 30th June, 1876, to 111,6867., and showed a balance of 88. in the company's hands.

379.-WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND. Incorporated by act of 30th June, 1862, to construct a line from Weymouth to the Isle of Portland, and an extension of the Wilts, Somerset, and Weymouth, to the Harbour. Mixed gauge. Length, 5 miles. Capital, 75,000l. in 10. shares and 25,000. on loan. Opened 9th October, 1865. Leased to Great Western and South Western, which conjointly work the line, and pay 4,500l. a year rent, being equivalent to 4 per cent. on the share and debenture capital; and this sum, after payment of the interest on debentures (25,000l., at 4 per cent.) and expenses of management, is divided among the shareholders.

380.-WHITBY, REDCAR, AND MIDDLESBOROUGH UNION. Incorporated by act of 16th July, 1866, to construct a line in the North Riding of York, from the Whitby Branch of the North Eastern to the Cleveland. Length, 16 miles. Capital, 250,000/. in 107. shares and 83,3007. on loan.

The act of 7th July, 1873, empowered the company to alter the line and levels near Whitby, and to abandon portions of authorised railway. Time for completion of works extended to July, 1877.

By act of 30th June, 1874, the company was authorised to raise 100,0007. new capital, by the creation of ordinary or preference shares, and to borrow on mortgage or by debenture stock a further sum of 33,000.

By act of 19th July, 1875, the line is leased in perpetuity to the North Eastern, at a minimun rent of 4,500/. per annum, with the option of purchase by the latter company after the expiration of 10 years from the opening of the through line to Whitby. By the same act the time limited for completion of works was further extended to 7th July, 1878.

381.-WHITEHAVEN, CLEATOR, AND EGREMONT.

Incorporated by act of 16th June, 1854, to construct a line from the Whitehaven and Furness Junction, at Whitehaven, to the town of Egremont (43 miles), with a branch to Frizington (2 miles). Capital, 50,000l.; borrowing powers, 16,6007.

By act of 21st March, 1857, the company was authorised to raise new capital to the extent of 25,000l., and to borrow on mortgage a sum of 8,000.

By act of 7th June, 1861, the company was authorised to extend its line from Frizington to Lamplugh (33 miles), and to widen and enlarge its existing railway and works. New capital, 45,0007. in 67. shares and 15,4007 on loan.

By act of 8th June, 1863, the company was authorised to construct an extension from Lamplugh to join the Cockermouth and Workington, and make some deviation on the Frizington Branch. New capital, 75,0007., at 5 per cent., and 20,000. on loan. By act of 19th June, 1865, the company was authorised to construct a line from Cleator to Briggrigg Moor, and other small branches. Length, 14 mile. New capital, 15,000l. in shares and 4,6007. on loan.

By act of 28th June, 1866, the Whitehaven, Cleator, and Egremont, jointly with the Whitehaven and Furness, were authorised to construct a line from Egremont to Sellafield. Length, 54 miles. Capital, in equal proportions, 66,000l. in shares and 22,000. on loan. Worked by Cleator and Egremont.

By the Board of Trade Certificate of 1866, the company was authorised to raise 45,000l. new share capital, and to borrow a further sum of 15,0007. By another Certificate of the Board of Trade, issued in 1871, further share capital of 50,000l. was authorised, and power given to borrow 16,0007. By a Board of Trade Certificate of 1873, the company was again authorised to raise new share capital, viz., to the amount of 45,0007., and to borrow on mortgage 15,0007.

By act of 2nd August, 1875, the company was authorised to construct a branch line from Ullock to Gilgarran (2 miles); to acquire additional lands; to enter into traffic arrangements with the Furness, &c. New capital, 48,000l. in shares or stock (preference or ordinary) and 16,0007. on loan or by debenture stock. By a Board of Trade Certificate issued in the same year, the company was authorised to issue 30,000l. additional capital, and to borrow on mortgage or by debenture stock a further sum of 10,000.

By act of 27th June, 1876, the company was authorised to construct a branch from Frizington (57 chains), to be called the "Mowbray Branch;' a line (to be called the "Gilgarran Extension") from the authorised Gilgarran Branch to Distington (1 mile 42 chains); and a branch (to be called the "Whitehaven Branch") from Distington to the Parton Station of the London and North Western (3 miles 4 chains). Additional capital, 75,000, and 25,000. on mortgage or by debenture stock. Power to company and London and North Western, Furness, and Maryport and Carlisle to enter into traffic arrangements. Mutual traffic facilities with London and North Western.

Incorporated by act of 12th July, 1869, to construct a railway from the South Wales Section of the Great Western, near Whitland, to Crymmych-Arms, Pembrokeshire, for Cardigan and Newport.
