Incorporated by act of 16th July, 1874. The main line, about 11 miles in length, commences by a junction with the Liverpool Extension of the Cheshire Lines Committee, at Glazebrook Station, between Warrington and Manchester, and terminates near the Market Place, in the town of Wigan, with branch to Westleigh, and forming connections with the Lancashire Union and London and North Western. Capital, 210,000/. in 107. shares and 70,0007. on loan.

By act of 2nd August, 1875, the company was authorised to make alterations and diversions in their authorised railways, and to construct new lines; to acquire additional lands; to raise 240,000l. additional capital; and to borrow a further sum of 80,0007.

The ceremony of turning the first sod took place on the 27th October, 1876, in the presence of Mr. R. A. Cross, M.P., the Home Secretary.

384.-WIGTOWNSHIRE.

Incorporated by act of 18th July, 1872, to construct a line from Newton-Stewart, on the Portpatrick, to Whithorn, 19 miles, and a tramway, 1 mile, to Garliestown. Capital, 96,000l. in 107. shares, to which the Town Council of Wigtown may subscribe. Loans, 32,000l., or by debenture stock. Agreements with Portpatrick and Caledonian. The line was opened from Newton-Stewart to Wigtown on 3rd April, 1875; and from Wigtown to Garliestown on 2nd August. The remainder of the line from Garliestown to Whithorn (4 miles) is expected to be opened on the 1st July, 1877. REVENUE.-The gross receipts for the half-year ended 31st January, 1876, amounted to 2,7967., and the expenditure to 2,1047., leaving a profit of 6927. Adding the balance brought forward, and interest on bank account, the total net revenue was 7407. which sufficed for the half-year's interest charges, and left a balance of 2391. to be carried forward. For the half-year ended 31st July, 1876, the gross receipts were 2,818., and the expenses 2,0257., giving, with the balance brought forward and interest on banking account, a total net revenue of 1,0387. Interest on mortgage loans absorbed 4467., and the balance of 5924, was carried forward to next half-year. In operation, 15 miles.

385.-WITNEY.

Incorporated by act of 1st August, 1859, to construct a line from the Great Western (Oxford, Worcester, and Wolverhampton Section), at Yarnton, to the town of Witney. Capital, 50,000l. in 107. shares ; loans, 16,0007.

By act of 17th May, 1861, the company was authorised to cancel shares, and to re-issue others at 5 per cent.; and at a special meeting on 8th June, 1861, 1,200 preference shares, at 5 per cent. in perpetuity, were created, representing 12,000. of capital, in lieu of unissued ordinary shares. Agreement in respect to working, maintenance, management, &c., with Great Western.

By act of 18th July, 1872, the company was authorised to borrow 16,000l. by additional loans, and to create a sinking fund for its redemption. The Great Western also obtained powers to guarantee the borrowed capital, and to enter into working agreements with the Witney.

REVENUE.--The net traffic receipts for the half-year ended 31st December, 1875, amounted to 2,1237., and the general charges to 1877., giving, with the balance of 517. from previous account, a total net revenue of 1,9877., which was applied as follows:-Interest on bonds, 7427.; interest on landowners' claims, 351.; dividend on preference shares, 3047.; on ordinary shares (at 3 per cent. per annum), 6341.; carried to mortgage sinking fund, 2007.; balance to next half-year's account, 717. The net traffic receipts for the half-year ended 30th June, 1876, amounted to 2,040., and the general charges to 1767., giving, with the balance brought forward, a total net revenue of 1,935., which sufficed for interest on bonds (7427.); dividend on preference shares (3047.); dividend on ordinary shares, at 3 per cent. per annum (5447.); sinking fund on mortgage bonds (204/.); and left a balance of 1417. to be carried forward to next half-year. The line is worked by the Great Western for 50 per cent. of the traffic receipts, and the Great Western allows the company a fixed sum of 1257. over and above the 50 per cent, of earnings.

CAPITAL.-The expenditure on this account to 30th June, 1876, amounted to 82,0817., the receipts to the same date having been 82,1947., as under:

386.-WIVENHOE AND BRIGHTLINGSEA.

Incorporated by act of 11th July, 1861, to construct a line from Wivenhoe, on the Tendring Hundred, to Brightlingsea, in the county of Essex. Length, 5 miles. Capital, 25,000l. in 107. shares; loans, 8,000l. Great Eastern subscribes 8,500., and works the line.

By act of 16th July, 1866, the company obtained power to raise additional capital to the extent of 15,0007. in shares (deferred and preferred) and 5,0007. on loan. Also to transfer the undertaking to the Great Eastern.

REVENUE.--The amount received for traffic on account from Great Eastern for the half-year ended 31st December, 1874, amounted to 1157., and for the half-year ended 30th June, 1875, to 1921. The balance at debit of revenue account on the latter date amounted to 3491.

389.-WORCESTER, BROMYARD, AND LEOMINSTER. Incorporated by act of 11th August, 1861, to construct a line from the West Midland, at Bransford Bridge, to the Shrewsbury and Hereford, near Leominster. Length, 24 miles. Capital, 200,0007. in 10. shares; loans, 66,5007.

By act of 14th July, 1864, the company obtained power to purchase additional land, with an extension of time for two years for completion of works.

By act of 28th June, 1866, the company obtained an extension of time for completion of works till 28th June, 1869. Also to issue 50,000l. in preference shares.

By Certificate of the Board of Trade, in 1869, two sections of the line were authorised to be abandoned, and the share capital reduced to 150,000., with borrowing powers limited to 50,000l., the total length of line remaining being 7 miles.

By act of 26th May, 1873, powers were obtained to construct the second section of the line from Yearsett to Bromyard, about 4 miles in length, and the time for the completion of works was limited to four years. New capital, 10,0007. in shares

or stock.

The Great Western maintains and works the line in perpetuity at 52 per cent. of the gross receipts. The interest on the debenture stock is charged, not on the net earnings, as is usually the case, but is a "first charge on the gross tolls, fares, rates, and charges" of the first section.

REVENUE.-The gross receipts for the half-year ended 31st December, 1875, amounted to 1,6951.; out of which, as a primary charge, the debenture interest (1,190.) was paid, and the balance (5057.) was carried to the working expenses account. The gross receipts for the half-year ended 30th June, 1876, amounted to 1,6417. The interest charges amounted to 1,200/., and the remaining 4417. was carried to working expenses account. The second section is expected to be completed about the middle of the present year.

391.-WREXHAM, MOLD, AND CONNAH'S QUAY JUNCTION.

Incorporated by act of 7th August, 1862, to construct a line from Wrexham to Buckley, with certain branches. Length, 12 miles. Capital, 150,0007. in 107. shares and 50,000l. on loan. Mutual facilities with the London and North Western, the Great Western, and the Wrexham and Minera. In operation, 16 miles.

By act of 25th July, 1864, the company obtained power to construct an extension to Whitchurch and Brymbo. Length, 20 miles. Capital, 200,0007. in shares and 66,6007. on loan.

By act of 5th July, 1865, the company was authorised to construct an extension to Connah's Quay. Length, 18 miles. Additional capital, 75,000.; no further

borrowing powers.

By act of 9th August, 1869, the company obtained an arrangement with its creditors, and was authorised to raise 162,0001. debenture capital.--For details of this arrangement, see Volume for 1870.

By act of 1873 further powers were conferred on the company, which was authorised to raise 6,000l. more debenture capital.

BUCKLEY.-Incorporated by act of 14th June, 1860, to construct a line from Buckley to Connah's Quay, Flintshire. Length, 5 miles. Capital, 30,0007. in 10. shares; loans, 10,000. By act of 29th June, 1863, the company was authorised to raise new capital to the extent of 30,000l., at such preference as the proprietors might think fit, and 10,000l. on mortgage; and by act of 18th May, 1866, the company was authorised to carry passengers on the line, and also to create new capital to the extent of 30,000l. in shares and 10,000l. on loan. The Buckley is now leased to the Wrexham and Mold, the latter company paying the interest on mortgages, 5 per cent. on the preference stock, and on the ordinary stock 44 per cent. per annum, until 1883; afterwards, 5 per cent.

REVENUE.-The gross receipts for the half-year ended 30th December, 1875, amounted to 10,3287., and the expenditure to 7,1417., leaving a profit of 3,1877. The half-year's interest and other charges required 7,7627., so that the deficiency was 4,5751.

The gross receipts for the half-year ended 30th June, 1876, amounted to 10,7697., the expenditure to 7,2767., and the net revenue to 3,4937., which was 4,3137. short of the half-year's interest and other charges. The accumulated balances at the debit of revenue account at 30th June, 1876, amounted to 67,7667.

392.-WYE VALLEY.

Incorporated by act of 10th August, 1866, to construct a line from Chepstow to Monmouth. Length, 15 miles. Capital, 230,0007. in 207. shares and 76,6007. on loan. Arrangements with Great Western, which is to work and maintain the line for 55 per cent. of the gross receipts for the first five years after the opening for traffic, and for 50 per cent. for all subsequent years.

By act of 16th June, 1871, the time for completion of works was extended to 1st July, 1874. Powers were conferred on the company by an act passed on the 14th June, 1875, to make railways from the South Wales Line of the Great Western to the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk, and Pontypool Railway.

By act of 11th August, 1876, the company was authorised to construct three short lines (length, 84 chains) in the parish of Chepstow; a river wall or wharf and three piers or jetties on the western bank of the River Wye, at Chepstow; two short lines (length, 40 chains) in the parish of Newland; and a line (length, 29 chains) in the parish of Dixton. New capital, 105,0007., and 34,8007. on loan or by debenture stock. The line was opened for traffic on 1st November, 1876.
