dix, No. 3.), of the Medicines, Drugs, and Necessaries, which shall, from Time to Time, be wanting, in order that he may examine it, and consider the Necessity of all, or any Part of such Supply; and, on the List being adjusted to his Satisfaction, he will sign the same and deliver it to the Agent to be forwarded to us; but when, from any unforeseen Cause, there shall happen to be a Want of any particular Article of Medicines, Drugs, or Necessaries, and the Time will not admit of a Demand being regularly transmitted to us, you are to give Notice thereof, in Writing, to the Surgeon, who shall deliver it to the Agent, in order that he may procure such Articles on the cheapest Terms in his Power.

IX.

You are to demand from the Agent, by Note under your be demanded Hand, approved by the Surgeon, sufficient Quantities of old Lifrom the nen, in order that you may issue the same for the Use of the Wards, upon Demands made of you, for Bandages, &c. or apply it to any other Purpose for which it can be used with Advantage; observing, that you are never to issue new Linen to be used on any Occasion where old Linen will answer the same Purpose,

X.

You are to keep a Book in the Form annexed (Appendix, No. Porter pre- 4.), in which you are daily to insert, from the Prescription Tickets or Notes beforementioned, immediately on their being received into the Dispensary, the Name of every Person for whom Wine and Porter may have been prescribed, and the Quantity so prescribed, which you are, every Evening to add up in the said Book, and then to transcribe the Total into another Book, in the annexed Form (Appendix, No. 5.), in which, you are also

to enter, an Account of the daily Issues of Sugar, Sago, Rice, Spices, and other Necessaries, which may have been prescribed by the Surgeon; and likewise, the Quantities of Calico, Linen, Lint, Flannel, Trusses, &c. demanded by Notes under his Hand. At the End of each Quarter, you are to cast up this Account, from Quarterly which, and your own Account of the Receipts of the above Arti- Receipts and cles, you are to make out an Abstract in the annexed Form (Appendix, No. 6), and deliver the same to the Surgeon for being examined by him, and transmitted to this Office.

XI.

You are to enter in a Book, to be kept by you for the Purpose, all Utensils used in the Dispensary, as well as such Articles as may be furnished by the Agent for the Use thereof, and to keep a particular Account of the Expenditure of the same, applying to the Agent, through the Surgeon, as Occasion may require, for a Survey to be taken on such of those Articles as may be considered unserviceable, that, in Case of their being condemned, other Articles may be supplied in lieu; and you are to deliver all such as may be condemned to the Agent, for being sold with other old Stores, taking his Receipt for the same, as your Voucher for the Expenditure thereof, on your Accounts being examined.

veying Officers, is to be delivered by them to the Agent for being
transmitted to us.

XIII.

You are, at the End of every Quarter, or oftener if we require ing the pro- it, to make Oath before a Magistrate, in the annexed Form (Appendix, No. 8.), that you have not, in the Time therein-mentioned, dispensed, issued, or used, or suffered to be dispensed, issued, or used, any Medicine, Drug, or Necessary, with which you have been entrusted, but according to the Directions you have received for that Purpose from the Surgeon, excepting such Medicines as you may have required for the Use of your own Family and Servants, which Affidavit is to be transmitted to this Office.

XIV.

You are to assist the Surgeon in the Duty of receiving Patients, and also, when the Business of the Dispensary will admit of it, in visiting the physical, or in dressing the surgical Patients; and in these Services you are to attend to the Regulations established by the Surgeon.

XV.

You are to confine the Practice of your Profession strictly and exclusively to your public Duty in the Hospital; and you are, on no Account, to visit, attend, or prescribe for, any Patient in or out of the Hospital, except for yourself and Family, if you should be disposed so to do, unless in Cases of sudden or accidental Emergency; nor are you to keep, or be in any way concerned in keeping, a Shop for the Sale of Medicines, Drugs, or other Articles; and you are not to employ, on your private Business, any La

bourer, Nurse, Artificer, Prisoner, or any other Person, nor in carrying Messages which do not relate to the Public Service, without our special Authority.

XVI.

Forms.

You are to demand of the Agent, by Note under your Hand, Printed such printed Forms as you may have Occasion to use from Time to Time; and you are to take every Precaution that they be not unnecessarily expended, wasted, or appropriated to any other Purpose than that for which they are intended, and that, when used, they have all the Columns properly and correctly filled up.

XVII.

You are not to absent yourself from your Duty without our Absence from previous Leave.

XVIII.

You are not, either directly or indirectly, to have any Interest whatever in any Contract or Contracts under this Board, or under any other Naval Department, nor in any Provisions, Stores, Medicines, Drugs, or Necessaries of any Kind, which may be purchased for the Service of Government, or in the Purchase of any Stores, or other Articles, or Effects, whether belonging to Government, or to the Patients who may have been in the Hospital, which may be sold by Government; nor are you, by any Ways or Means whatever, to be interested in, or to make any Advantage of the Medicines, Drugs, Necessaries, or Stores, supplied for the Use of the Patients and Others in the Hospital, nor are you, or any Person for you, to demand or receive, under any Name, Promise, or Pretence whatever, any Perquisite, Fee, Gra

tuity, or Reward, from any Contractor, Tradesman, or other Person, having any Connexion, either as a Principal or an Agent, with Part of your public Duty, or having Business to transact, either at the Hospital or at this Office; nor are you, or any Person in your Behalf, to receive any Fee, Gratuity, or Reward whatever, for the Nomination or Appointment of any HospitalMate, Clerk, or other Person to be employed in any Capacity whatever in the Hospital. To this Effect you are to take an Oath in the prescribed Form (Appendix, No. 9.), and give Bond (Appendix, No. 10.), in Three Times the Amount of your Salary, and in Case of Default therein, you will be dismissed from your Situation, and declared incapable of serving His Majesty in any civil Capacity whatever. You are also, to make Affidavit Quarterly, in the Form (No. 11.) in the Appendix.

.XIX.

The foregoing Instructions define your general Duty, so far as junction for the Perform is considered necessary; for in the Concerns of your Office Cirance of Duty. cumstances must occur, for which no specific Instructions can previously be given. You are to take Care that the best Economy be observed on all Occasions, and that every Means be adopted to prevent the Embezzlement of public Property, or the smallest Abuse in any Part of the Service with which you are entrusted ; and you are to report to the Agent every Difficulty or Obstruction which you may meet with in the Performance of any Part of your Duty; in the Execution of which, it is expected that you shew an Interest for His Majesty's Service, and exert yourself to fulfil, not only the Letter, but the Spirit of these Instructions, as
