5. Describe Fizeau's method of finding the velocity of light.

6. Does white light transmitted through a piece of coloured glass acquire colour from the glass? If not, what really does happen, and why?

8. Describe the structure and arrangement of the parts of the eye in front of the vitreous humour.

1. What are the different modifications of leaves present on a flowering plant? Give some description of them in any one plant.

2. Give some description of a pea-pod and its contents.

3. Give some account of the various structures composing the fibro-vascular bundle of such a plant as the gum tree.

4. Describe and give examples of the following forms of fruits, (1) drupe, (2) bacca, (3) nut, (4) siliqua, (5) hesperidium, (6) achene.

5. Describe (1) the different relative positions in which stamens are inserted, (2) the principal modifications in form of the corolla, giving examples in each case.

6. What is the signification of the words exogenous and endogenous? Give examples of different plants to which the terms could be respectively applied.

7. Describe the characters of any three out of the following natural orders:-Crucifera, Violacea, Rutacea, Myrtaceæ, Epacrida, Proteacea.

8. How would you distinguish a plant from an animal ?

9. Describe the process of germination in any Dicotyledonous plant, giving some description of the ripe seed.

10. Give the names of ten of the principal orders of plants found in Australia (other than those mentioned in question 7), naming one typical example of each.

A.-1. Translate into Greek prose

The envoys were introduced to the Senate, and spoke to this effect: "The news of the destruction of the general and his army was so grievous to the king that he could not have been more troubled by any disaster to himself and his realm. And so, though he is well aware that the greatness of the Roman people is almost more worthy of admiration in disaster than in success, yet he has sent everything with which good and loyal allies are wont to supply the needs of war, and he earnestly entreats the Senate not to refuse to accept them. First of all, for good fortune's sake, we bring a golden statue of Victory accept it, and keep it and reckon it as your own for ever."

2. Translate, with any notes you may think necessary briefly written in the margin

3. Explain the principle of the middle voice as illustrated in the use of διδάσκω, διδάσκομαι: ποιῶ and ποιοῦμαι λόγον : ἀποδοῦναι, ἀποδόσθαι.

4. State and illustrate all the various uses of ὅπως.
