CHAPTER 61.

An Act to amend The Public Works Act.

(Assented to April 2, 1927.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta,

enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Public Works Act Short title Amendment Act, 1927."

2. The Public Works Act, being chapter 44 of the Revised Section 20 Statutes of Alberta, 1922, is amended as to section 20, by striking out the word "Department" and inserting in lieu thereof the words "proper Land Titles Office."

3. Section 21 of the said Act is hereby struck out.

4. Section 22 of the said Act is amended by striking out Section 22 the word "Department" and inserting in lieu thereof the words "Land Titles Office."

5. This Act shall come into force on the day upon which Coming into it is assented to.

CHAPTER 62.

An Act to amend The Public Highways Act.

(Assented to April 2, 1927.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Public Highways Act Amendment Act, 1927."

2. The Public Highways Act, being chapter 45 of the Section 27a Revised Statutes of Alberta, 1922, is amended by adding as section 27a, immediately after section 27, the following: "27a.-(1) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may from time to time make regulations"(a) prohibiting or regulating the erection of signs and Erection of sign boards and the pasting or painting of signs or boards notices and the exposing of any advertising device upon or within one-quarter of a mile from any public highway outside the corporate limits of any city, town or village;

"(b) for licensing and fixing the fees for licenses to be Licenses granted to any person for erecting any such sign or sign board or pasting or painting any such sign or notice or exposing any such advertising device on any public highway or within one-quarter of a mile thereof.

"(2) Any person contravening any such regulations or Penalty destroying or defacing any sign, sign board, notice or advertising device lawfully authorized under this Act, or any sign, sign board or notice, the property of His Majesty, shall be guilty of an offence and liable upon summary conviction to a fine of not less than five dollars and not more than one hundred dollars in addition to the value of the property injured or destroyed and in default thereof to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one month, unless the fine and costs are sooner paid."

3. This Act shall come into force on the day upon which Coming into it is assented to.

CHAPTER 63.

An Act to License and Regulate Public Vehicles on Highways.

(Assented to April 2, 1927.)

HIS
[IS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of
the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta,

enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Public Vehicles Act, Short title 1927."

2. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires: (a) "Freight vehicle" shall mean any motor vehicle Freight operated by or on behalf of any person for gain for the purpose of transporting any goods, merchandise or livestock over, upon or along any public highway; (b) "Minister" shall mean the Minister of Public Works; Minister (c) "Public highway" shall mean every highway, road, Public road allowance, trail, thoroughfare, lane and alley over which there is a public right of vehicular travel;

(d) "Public vehicle" shall mean any motor vehicle oper- vehicle
ated by or on behalf of any person as a public con-
veyance in the way of business for the purpose of
transporting as a public carrier over, upon or along
any public highway passengers, or passengers and
express freight which might be carried in a passen-
ger vehicle, and which is not hired exclusively to
one passenger or to one party of passengers.

3. No person shall operate upon a public highway out- Necessity of side of the limits of any city, town or village any public vehicle or any freight vehicle without first obtaining from the Minister a license so to do.

4. (1) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may from Classification time to time

(a) Classify public vehicles and freight vehicles according to the weight thereof;

(b) Classify any public vehicles and freight vehicles of similar weight according to the nature of the tyres thereof;
