T. SUFFIELD AND CO.

Call the particular attention of

SHIP-OWNERS, SHIP-BUILDERS, AND COMMANDERS OF STEAM AND SAILING VESSELS, to the Simple and Efficient Arrangements of their

PATENT PUMPS AND FIRE-ENGINES,

Both Fixed and Portable, with PATENT VALVES and other Improvements.

These Pumps are free from that liability to choke which is common to other Pumps, and their Working Parts are not susceptible of derangement either from wear or from being long out of use. They pass entirely through them, with ease, any substance that may enter the Suction Pipes. The Novelties in these Pumps are their adaptation to the varied duties of Ships' Pumps, the facilities they afford for Cleansing the Suction Pipes, and for Sounding or Examining the Valves; the readiness with which they may be used for Ventilating the Bilge, or for acting as a Syphon either for Watering the Ship, or for extinguishing Accidental Fires on board; the rapidity with which they can be converted into Fire Pumps, or be applied to the Washing of Decks; and their capability of Pumping from Several Compartments. Also, to their

MARINE ENGINE-ROOM TELEGRAPHS,

WATER POISONED

BY LEADEN PIPES.

"The above engraving represents accurately a section of a leaden pipe, which was employed for a short time in conveying water from a well on the grounds of Mr. Dick, of Bonchurch, Isle of Wight. The water has cut these deep pits almost through the pipe, and not only upon the portion which we have illustrated, but has formed similar chasms throughout the entire length."-Erpositor,

Poisoned Water Preventable.

BY THE USE OF GUTTA PERCHA TUBING.

The Gutta Percha Company have been favoured with the following letter,

From Dr. MURRAY, Hull.

"It is impossible to conceive of anything more injuriou or destructive to the health of the community than the usa of leaden pipes for the conveyance of water. The poisonous salts of lead thereby communicated are most insidious and subtle. I hail with gratitude the substitution of Gutta Percha Tubing, I have had the leaden pipe of my own house removed, and its place supplied with one of Gutta Percha. Nothing can be better. I have also recommended it to others, who have adopted the expedient.

Resistance of Frost.

The Gutta Percha Company have been favoured with the following Letters in reference to the non-conducting properties of Gutta Percha Tubing, in the resistance of Frost.

From J. ARMSTRONG, Esq., M.D., Gravesend. "My private house, which was supplied with your Gutta Percha Tubing some five or six years ago, has never required the slightest attention; and previously, there was no winter passed that we were not deluged in consequence of the bursting of the leaden pipes."

From HENRY BROWN and SONS, Western Works, 108 Rockingham-street, Sheffield. "We have now a positive proof of the frost-resisting properties of the Gutta Percha Piping. On our premises we have a leaden Pipe and a Gutta Percha one lying side by side. The leaden one has been completely frozen up at least ten days, and the Gutta Percha one is still unaffected.

THE demand for Mr. E. J. REED's paper

The demand still continuing, it has been deemed desirable to reprint it in a separate form. An 8vo. edition of it, in large type, and on fine paper, has, therefore, been prepared, and may now be had at the Office of this Magazine, price 1s.

LONDON, March 25, 1859.

THOMAS GLOVER takes this opportunity of thanking Gas Companies and his other Customers for the very liberal support and patronage he has received during the past year, which has far exceeded his most sanguine anticipations, having sold a greater number of his PATENT DRY GAS-METERS since the dissolution of his partnership with Mr. Croll than he was ever previously enabled to do in any one year.

THOMAS GLOVER confines his sole attention to the business of Gas-Meter Making. The propriety of his doing so is satisfactorily proved by his success; and, without the practice of any quackery, or any attempt to delude the public by an absurd exhibition of "Old and New Valves," his Meters are in general use by the Metropolitan Gas and other Companies in this Country and abroad. For example, one Metropolitan Company have now in use above 12,500 of his Patent Dry Gas-Meters; some of these Meters have been fixed for Fourteen Years, and are still in working order, without complaint from either the Company or the Consumer.

THOMAS GLOVER thinks it necessary to put Gas Companies on their guard against parties selling Patent Dry GasMeters constructed in imitation of his, but unskilfully made on erroneous principles, and with improper and unsuitable materials. THOMAS GLOVER's Workshops are now the most extensive in this or any other country, and he is thereby enabled promptly to execute orders to any extent required. Purchasers may at any time inspect his Works and the Materiais of which his Meters are constructed. He is ready to enter into Contracts with Gas Companies and others to uphold their Stock of his Meters for Twenty Years at an annual charge varying from 24 to 5 per cent., and to leave always in the hands of Gas Companies Three Years' charge for upholding, as a guarantee for the fulfilment of the Contract.
