CHAPTER 36.

An Act respecting Slot Machines.

(Assented to April 12, 1924.)

HIS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Slot Machine Act."

2. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, (a) "Peace officer" shall mean any person who is a mem- Peace officer ber of the Alberta Provincial Police Force, or of the police force of any city, town, village or municipal district in Alberta, or who is appointed as a constable under the provisions of any statute of the Province of Alberta providing for the appointment of constables;

(b) "Slot machine" shall mean any automatically or Slot machine mechanically operated contrivance or device which delivers or purports to deliver to any person upon or subsequently to the insertion therein of any money or any substance representing money, any premium, prize or reward consisting either of money or money's worth or anything which is intended to be exchanged for money or money's worth, and whether such contrivance or device also delivers or causes to be delivered any goods to, or performs or causes to be performed any service for any person or not.

found within the Province at any time after the expiration of one week from the date of the notice, the same will be liable to seizure and confiscation under the provisions of this Act.

6. If any slot machine in respect of which a notice has been given pursuant to section 4 hereof is found within the Province at any time after the expiration of one week from the giving of such notice every peace officer is empowered to seize such slot machine and the same to bring before a justice of the peace who shall thereupon issue a summons addressed to the person or persons in whose apparent possession the same was in at the time of seizure, calling upon such person at the time and place therein mentioned to shew cause why the same should not be confiscated; and unless the justice of the peace is then satisfied that the same is not a slot machine, he shall proceed to make an order that such machine shall be confiscated to His Majesty to be disposed of as the Attorney General may direct, and shall have power to make such order, whether or not the person summoned is the owner or lessee of or otherwise entitled to the lawful possession of the said machine.

7. This Act shall come into force upon proclamation.

CHAPTER 37.

An Act respecting the Hours of Labor of Employees

of Permanent Fire Departments.

(Assented to April 12, 1924.)

IS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta,

enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as "The Fire Department's Short title Hours of Labor Act.”

2. Where in any city, town or village there is a permanent Twenty-four fire department the officers and employees of which are regularly employed and paid by the municipal corporation, every officer and employee of such department shall be off duty for one full day of twenty-four hours in every calendar week, but where what is known as "double-platoon system" is in operation in any such fire department the twenty-four hours release at the change of platoons shall not be regarded as a day off for the purposes of this section.

6. 7. The penalties provided by this Act shall be recoverable under The Fines and Penalties Act.

8. Notwithstanding anything in this Act contained, the other provisions of this Act shall not apply to any city, town or village, until a vote has been taken and assented to by a majority of the electors voting thereon at the next annual election of councillors.

9. This Act shall come into force and take effect one month after the date upon which it is assented to.
