Population. — Approximate population is: Nigerian 40,000; and expatriate-200.

River: Oceangoing vessels load in the river for United Kingdom, the continent of Europe, and United States. Ferry: Every half hour (approximately) during daylight.

Warri

Warri is the most important town in the Delta Province and is the administrative headquarters. It is of great importance for shipping on inland waterways and as a center for retail trade. Commercial activities are the production and export of timber, rubber, palm kernels, and palm oil. Industries are limited to ship repair. There is one catering resthouse located in the town as well as a general hospital. There is the usual movie and two private clubs, one for Europeans and the other Anglo-African.

Population. Approximate population is: Nigerian55,000; and expatriate-110.

Communications.-Road: Warri is 148 miles from Asaba, 63 miles from Benin City, 297 miles from Ibadan, 77 miles from Kwale, 386 miles from Lagos, 31 miles from Sapele, and 27 miles from Ughelli.

Sea: Oceangoing vessels load in the river for United Kingdom, Continent, or the United States ports. Coastal shipping to Calabar, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Victoria.

Inland shipping: Frequent and regular cargo and passenger services up the Niger and Benue Rivers as far as Yola and Garua (French Adamawa) and also an irregular creek service to Lagos. Small passenger launches ply through the creeks to Burutu and Forcados.

SOUTHERN CAMEROONS

Buea (Seat of Government)

Buea is the seat of government in the Southern Cameroons. It is located on the slopes of the Cameroons Mountain about 3,000 feet above sea level and has a healthful and invigorating climate.

Population. Population is Nigerian-3,009; and expatriate-100.

Medical facilities.-The nearest hospital is at Victoria (23 miles).

Recreational facilities.-Climbing, golf, tennis, riding; Buea Club; Mountain Club.

Kumba

Kumba is a town of fast-growing importance and may eventually become the principal commercial center for the Cameroons. It is the headquarters of the Cameroons Cooperative Exporters, Ltd., the marketing organization for the cooperatives of the area. Commercial activities are the production and marketing of bananas, cocoa, and coffee. There is a local fishing industry in Crater Lake. Other industries are nil. There is a general hospital and a noncatering resthouse. Recreational facilities are limited to one tennis court. Population. Population is: Nigerian-11,672; and expatriate 86.

Communications.-Road: Connected by road with Victoria. Kumba is 120 miles from Mamfe and 65 miles from Victoria.

Victoria

The town of Victoria is dominated by the Cameroons Mountain, rising to 13,400 feet. Twenty-two miles away is the island of Fernando Po which itself rises to 10,000 feet. Victoria is at the present time the most important town in the Southern Cameroons. Industries are nil, but there is both production and export of Bananas, cocoa, and rubber as well as discharging and loading of ships at Bota nearby. Accommodations can be had at a catering resthouse with five double chalets, and medical facilities are available at the Albert Nursing Home and the general hospital. Recreational facilities are found at the boat club, a movie, the Community Centre, and a recreational club.

Population. Population is: Nigerian-8,025; and expatriate-391.

Road: Local transport plies to all points in the hinterland. Victoria is 281 miles from Bamenda, 23 miles from Buea, 64 miles from Kumba, 185 miles from Mamfe, and 16 miles from Tiko.

Sea: Direct communication to United Kingdom and the Continent is achieved by Elders and Fyffes banana boats.

Creek: Local foodstuffs are usually carried by canoe through the creeks.
