PREFACE.

THE excellent works of Mr. Serjeant Sellon, Mr. Tidd, and others of a similar description, have thrown so much light on all that relates to the Practice of the Courts of Common Law, as if not to supersede, at least materially to diminish, the necessity of further labor or investigation. But those books are professedly of a general nature; and must necessarily fail to treat of the several branches with the fulness and particu larity, which some, and especially that of Bail Practice, seem to demand. Were it even possible for works like the abovementioned, (embracing, as they do, so great a variety of matter,) to accomplish this object; still the number and bulk of the volumes would render it desirable, that any portion to which constant and immediate reference is made, should be treated of in a separate and more convenient form.
