PREFACE.

IN the following pages are selected the opinions of authors esteemed for their knowledge of the various species of trees, and in no case is a soil recommended as appropriate to any tree, without an observation having been made upon the progress that particular soil has produced. Hunter's edition of Evelyn's Silva," is, no doubt, the most valuable book to planters, but to those persons who have not an opportunity of consulting that work, and many writers, whose remarks are very interesting, the Author hopes these gleanings and humble hints may be of some trifling service.
