Guilt and demerit differ here,

Though oft their names confounded are.
I'm guilty in myself always,

Since fin's demerit ever itays. I
Yet in my Head I'm always free
From proper guilt affecting me;
Because my Surety's blood cancell'd
The bond of curfes once me held. 2
The guilt that pardon did divorce,
From legal threat'nings drew its force; 3
But fin's defert that lodges ftill,
Is drawn from fin's intrinfic ill. 4
Were guilt nought elfe but fin's defert,
Of pardon I'd renounce my part;
For, were I now in heav'n to dwell,
I'd own iny fins deserved hell. 5
This does my highest wonder move
At matchlefs juftifying love,

1 Rom. vii. 13, 14. Was then that which is good, made death unto me? God forbid. But fin, that it might appear fin, working death in me by that which is good; that fin by the commandment might become exceeding finful. For we know that the law is fpiritual: but I am carnal, fold under fin. Eph. v. 6. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of difobedience.

2 Rom. v. 1. Therefore, being juftified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift. Verfe 9. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be faved from wrath through him. Ver. 11. And not only fo, but we alfo joy in God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, by whom we have now received the atonement.

3 Gal, iii. 10. For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curfe: for it is written, Curfed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Verse 13. Chrift hath redeemed us from the curfe of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Curfed is every, one that hangeth on a tree.

4 Pfalm li. 4. See figure 6. p. 218. Luke xv. 18. I will arife, and go to my father, and will fay unto him, Father, I have finned against heaven, and before thee.

4 Luke xv. 19. And am no more worthy to be called thy fon. Rev. v. 4. And I (John) wept much because no man was found worthy to open, and to read the book, neither to look thereon. Verfe 9. And they fung a new fong, faying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the feals thereof: for thou waft flain, and haft redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. Ver. 11,-13. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the beafts, and the elders and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thoufands; faying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was flain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and bleffing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and fuch as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I faying, Bleffing, and honour, and glory, and power be unto him that fitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever:

That thus fecures from endless death
A wretch deferving double wrath, I
Though well my black defert I know,
Yet I'm not liable to woe;

While full and complete righteousness
Imputed for my freedom is. 2
Hence my fecurity from wrath,
As firmly ftands on Jefus' death, 3
As does my title unto heav'n
Upon his great obedience giv'n. 4.
The fentence Heav'n did full pronounce,
Has pardon'd all my fins at once;
And ev'n from future crimes acquit,
Before I could the facts commit. 5

vii. 1.

1 Rom. vii. 24, 25. O wretched man that I am! who fhall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Chap. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift Jefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. was before a blafphemer, and a perfecutor, and injurious: but I obtained 1 Tim. i. 13. Who mercy, because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief. Ver. 15,17. This is a faithful faying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Chrift Jefus came into the world to fave finners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit, for this caufe I obtained mercy, that in me first Jefu Chrift might fhew forth all long-fuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wife God, be honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

21 Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who, of God, is made unto ns-righteoufnefs-and redemption. 2 Cor. v. 21. God hath made Chrift to be fin for us, who knew no fin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Rom. iv. 11. And he (viz. Abraham) received the fign of circumcision, a seal of the righteoufnefs of the faith which he had, yet being uncircumcifed: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumciled; that righteousness may be imputed unto them also. Ver. 22,-25. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteoufnel. Now it was not written for his fake alone, that it was imputed to him; but for us also, to whom it fhall be imputed, if we believe on him that raifed up Jelus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered for our offences, and was raited again for our juftification.

3 Rom. v. 9. Much more then being now justified by his blood, we shall be faved from wrath through him.

4 Rom. v. 17, 18, 19.-They which receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnels, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Chrift.-By the righte oufness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life.-By the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous. Verse 21. Grace reigns through righteoufnefs unto eternal life, by Jefus Christ our Lord.

5 Pfalm ciii. 3. Blefs the Lord, O my fonl-who forgiveth all thine iniqui. ties; who healeth all thy difeafes. 2 Cor. vi. 19. God was in Christ, recon. ciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them.— Verle 21. See figure 2. above. Dan. ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finith the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlafting righteoufnels. Ifa. liv. 10. For the mountains fhall depart, and the hills fhall be removed; but my kindness fhall not depart from thee, nei ther fhall the covenant of my peace be removed, faith the Lord, that hath

I'm always in a pardon'd state
Before and after fin 1; but yet,
That vainly I prefume not hence,
I'm feldom pardon'd to my fenfe. 2
Sin brings a vengeance on my head,
Though from avenging wrath I'm freed. 3
And though my fins all pardon'd be,
Their pardon's not apply'd to me. 4
Thus though I need no pardon more,
Yet need new pardons ev'ry hour, 5
In point of application free:

Lord, wash anew, and pardon me.

mercy on thee. Heb. viii. 12. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their fins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

1 Rom. viii. 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift Jefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Ver. 33,-39. Who fhall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that juftifieth: who is he that condemneth? It is Chrift that died, yea, rather, that is rifen again, who is even at the right-hand of God, who alfo maketh interceffion for us.Who fhall separate us from the love of Chrift? fhall tribulation, or distress, or perfecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or fword? Nay, in all thefe things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. For I am perfuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things prefent, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Chrift Jefus our Lord.

2 Pfalm xxv. 11. For thy name's fake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great. And li. 8, 9. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou haft broken may rejoice. 5 Mat. vi. 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 1 Joha i 7, 8. If we walk in the light, as God is in the light, we have fellowfhip one with another; and the blood of Jefus Chrift, his Son, cleanfeth us from all fin. If we say that we have no fin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

6 John vi. 40. And this is the will of him that fent me, that every one which feeth the Son, and believeth on hum, may have everlasting life.

Yet never can believe at all,

Till once I fhut the feeing eye. I
When fight of sweet experince

Can give my faith no helping hand, 2
The fight of found intelligence

Will give it ample ground to stand. 3
I walk by faith and not by fight; 4
Yet knowledge does my faith refound, 5
Which cannot walk but in the light, 6
Ev'n when experience runs a-ground. 7
By knowledge I difcern and fpy

In divine light the object shown; 8
By faith I take and clofe apply

The glorious object as mine own. 9
My faith thus ftands on divine light,
Believing what it clearly fees; 10
Yet faith is oppofite to fight,

Trusting its ear, and not its eyes. II

And 2 Cor. iv. 6. And God who commanded the light to thine out of darkness, hath fhined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jefus Chriít.

10 Gal. i. 16. But when it pleased God-to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.

Faith lift'ning to a fweet report,

Still comes by hearing, not by fight; I
Yet is not faith of faving fort,

But when it fees in divine light. 2
In fears I spend my vital breath;
In doubts I wafte my paffing years; 3
Yet ftill the life I live is faith,

The oppofite of doubts and fears. 4
'Tween clearing faith and clouding sense,
I walk in darkness and in light. 5
I'm certain oft, when in fufpence,

While fure by faith, and not by fight. 6

11 Eph. i. 13. In Chrift ye alfo trufted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gofpel of your falvation.

And being not weak in faith, he confidered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.
