tion. Captain Chase rewarded the natives with a portion of the oil they had saved. They formed a native missionary society, to which they contributed a considerable part of what they so received, and sold to the captain a part, for which he paid them; and I had much pleasure in remitting to the treasurer of the London Missionary Society a set of bills for £66, which they had received from Captain Chase.

PRAYER ON SHIP-BOARD ANSWERED. From Williams's Missionary Enterprize, p. 408. AFTER landing our stores at Rarotonga, Te-ava, a pious and intelligent member of Mr. Buzacott's church, was set apart to the important office of a missionary; being designed for the station of Manons, the island of which the gigantic Matetau, to whom I promised a teacher, was chief. Makea also was anxious to accompany me, and hoping that many advantages might result from his presence, we readily acceded to his wish. Every thing being ready, on Thursday evening, 11th of October, 1832, we directed our course once more for the Samoa Islands.

On the following Tuesday I requested Te-ava to conduct our morning's devotions; and being much pleased with the novelty and excellency of his prayer, and the pious fervour of his manner, I wrote it down immediately after, and have preserved the following extract:

"If we fly up to heaven we shall find thee there; if we dwell upon the land, thou art there: if we sail upon the sea, thou art there and this affords us comfort; so that we sail upon the ocean without fear, because thou, O God, art in our ship. The king of our bodies has his subjects to whom he gives his orders; but if he himself goes with them, his presence stimulates their zeal, they begin it with energy they do it soon-they do it well. O Lord, thou art the King of our spirits, thou hast issued orders to thy subjects to do a great work, thou hast commanded them to go into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature.' We, O Lord, are going upon that errand, and let thy presence go with us to quicken us, and enable us to persevere in the great work till we die. Thou hast said that thy presence shall go with thy people, even unto the end of the world. Fulfil, O Lord, to us, this thy cheering promise. I see, O Lord, a compass in this vessel, by

which the shipmen steer the right way. Do thou be our compass to direct us in the right course, that we may escape obstructions and dangers in our work. Be to us, O Lord, the compass of salvation."

On the morning of the 17th we descried land, having run a distance of nearly eight hundred miles in five days, without having had occasion to shift our sails since we bid adieu to our friends at Rarotonga.

The land proved to be the island of Manua, the most easterly of the Samoa group, and about two hundred and fifty miles from that on which our missionaries were residing.

MARITIME ENORMITIES.

MUTINY AND MURDERS AT SEA.

A dreadful mutiny and massacre has taken place on board the British ship Fanny, Captain M'Kay, master, formerly sailing from London. This fine ship, the property of Messrs. Jardine, Mathison, and Co., merchants of Canton, left Chanceroo Bay for Lintin, on the 17th of August, 1836, with a mixed crew of Europeans, Manillas, and Lascars. On the same night, the Manilla men, who had entered into a conspiracy to take the vessel, and murder the captain, officers, and Europeans, rose upon them, and first despatched the unfortunate commander with their knives, and threw his body overboard. The savage and treacherous villains then murdered the Europeans, who were surprised and overpowered. The mutineers took possession of the Fanny, and took her to the north coast of Luconia, and there, after plundering the vessel, sunk her. It appears, that previous to the mutineers leaving the coast of China, they landed a portion of the Lascars who had been wounded and refused to join in the massacre. On landing, the Chinese authorities took them up, to give some account of themselves; but the Lascars and the Chinese did not understand each other's language, and the Lascars were kept as prisoners in the interior of the country, and had not been sent to Canton when the last ship left there. The ship has been found, sunk on the northeast coast of Luconia, and the mutineers had been seen with the gold and silver bars, stamped with the Chinese mark; but whether the government of Manilla had taken steps to bring the atrocious wretches to justice, is not yet known.

Capt. M'Kay was a fine, gentlemanly man, who had spent many years at sea, and was about to return to this country, with upwards of £50,000 he had amassed by his own exertions. At the time the Fanny was cut off, there was specie on board to the amount of 100,000 dollars, and this, it is supposed, excited the cupidity of the Manilla men, and caused them to murder the captain and officers, and seize the ship. Luconia, or Manilla, is the chief of the Philippine Islands, in Asia, situate in the Pacific Ocean, between 117 and 123 degrees of E. long., and between 12 and 13 degrees N. lat., 300 miles S.E. of China. It was near the island of Luconia that Anson took the rich Acapulco ship, laden with silver, and bound to Manilla, the treasure whereof he brought to England in 1774.

SLAVE TRADE IN BRAZIL.

THE following extract of a Boston paper shows the horrid activity with which the slave trade is carried on in Brazil : — "This abominable traffic is carried on between the coast of Africa and Brazil with unabated vigour, and is undoubtedly winked at by the Brazilian government. In the latter part of July last, four vessels landed their cargoes of wretched Africans at some of the out-ports in the vicinity of Pernambuco, and four more cargoes were shortly expected. One of the vessels which arrived landed 447 slaves, the freight amounting to 38,000 milreis."

How deeply humiliating to reflect on our fellow-men addicted to the horrid practice detailed in these two articles! But these are only examples of very many of the same class. Some relief, however, may be derived from the fact of the increasing number of BETHEL ships and BETHEL seamen; and especially that God has predicted the conversion of ships and seamen to his service and glory. "O LORD God of salvation, have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty!"

VALUABLE CARGOES.

ON Monday, August the 7th, the Rev. Messrs. A. and J. Stronach, for China, Rev. W. P. Lyon, for Benares, and Rev. T. L. Lessel, for Bengal, embarked at Portsmouth,

on board the Broxbournebury, Captain Chapman, bound for Calcutta.

On Tuesday, August the 29th, the Rev. Robert Caldwell, appointed to Madras, embarked at Gravesend, on board the Mary Ann, Captain Tarbutt, bound for India. On Tuesday, September the 5th, the ship put into Plymouth, damaged by storms in the Channel; but it was expected she would sail again in a few days.

Every sincere Christian will delight to unite in prayer for these servants of the Lord Jesus. God of glory and of grace, waft these vessels safely and speedily to their destined ports, and regard thy missionary servants with special favour; that while traversing the mighty ocean, beholding thy glorious works in the deep, their minds may repose on thee, their covenant God and Father, being endowed with the rich gifts and graces of thy Holy Spirit. Unfold to their understanding the sublime doctrines of life eternal by Jesus Christ; qualify them to preach the great salvation to the heathen; and, while labouring to establish Messiah's kingdom among the Gentiles, may they be strengthened by thy grace, and see, through thy blessing, the pleasure of the Lord prospering in their hand. O grant that the glad tidings of their successes in the conversion of poor deluded idolaters to Christ, may gladden the hearts of thy servants in Britain, and thus a regenerated and holy people, through India and thy British Israel may give glory to thy holy name, through Jesus Christ ou Lord. Amen.

CONTINENTAL VOYAGERS UP THE RHINE IN 1837.

THERE is no record of such a concourse of travellers as there is this summer, says a Brussels paper: the steam boats, which have increased in number beyond all expectation, scarcely suffice to convey the tourists from all parts of the world, who after having visited Belgium, go up the Rhine and back again. The year 1831 has hitherto been considered as remarkable, because 30,000 travellers were conveyed by the steam-boats in that year; but those who have travelled by the same route this year may be estimated at 150,000.

EXTRAORDINARY CAPTURE OF WHALES. On Friday, upwards of 180 small whales, averaging from 15 to 22 feet in length, were captured near Ardmaddy, the Marquis of Breadalbane's residence, in Argyleshire. They were pursued by a number of boats for several miles up and down the Sound of Seil, and were at last driven into a narrow part, within a hundred yards of the very place where a whale eighty feet long was taken three years ago. Here the boats closed upon them, and not one was allowed to escape. With the exception of two men who were slightly hurt, and a boat, which one of the largest of the whales broke to pieces with its tail, the captors came off scathless. The chase, whilst it lasted, was truly exciting, and was witnessed by the Marchioness of Breadalbane and her sister, Miss Baillie, who happened to be out in a barge at the time.-Kelso Chronicle, July 1837.
