INTRODUCTION The School of Tropical Medicine was founded in November, 1898, and is governed by a Committee representative of the University, the Royal Southern Hospital, and the merchants and shipowners of Liverpool. It was formally opened by Lord Lister in April, 1899, and a year later received official recognition from Government as an institution at which their Medical Officers may be specially trained for their professional work in the Tropics. In 1902, His Grace the Duke of Northumberland, K.G., became the Honorary Vice-President of the School. The School received its Charter of Incorporation in 1905, and in the same year Her Royal Highness, Princess Christian, accepted the position of Honorary President. OBJECTS OF THE SCHOOL I. 1. To train medical men in the special subject of tropical diseases. 2. To promote research in tropical diseases. 3. To advise regarding scientific measures against diseases in the tropics. The School has sent out nineteen expeditions to different parts of the tropics in order to investigate diseases or advise regarding sanitary measures. It has also published twenty-three separate memoirs by members of the staff or workers connected with the School, besides several miscellaneous works. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Complete courses are offered by the University for the Diploma in Tropical Medicine (see pp. 293, 294) and for training in Tropical Diseases and Medicine. The instruction is given partly at the Johnston Laboratory in the University, and partly at the Tropical Ward of the Royal Southern Hospital with its associated Clinical Laboratories, and is arranged as follows: LECTURES AND CLASSES TROPICAL MEDICINE AND HYGIENE Professor Ross Five lectures a week during each term, commencing at noon every day, except on Saturdays and Sundays. Additional lectures are also given occasionally by members of the staff, and by workers of the School on their return from abroad. PRACTICAL PARASITOLOGY AND BACTERIOLOGY Dr. STEPHENS Five demonstrations every week from 10 a.m. at the Johnston Laboratory. MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY Mr. NEWSTEAD till noon Two lectures or demonstrations every week at the Johnston Laboratory in the afternoon. CLINICAL TROPICAL MEDICINE The Physicians of the Tropical Ward of the Royal Southern Hospital and also Professor Ross and Dr. STEPHENS Three afternoons every week at the Tropical Ward of the Royal Southern Hospital.
