FIFTH SERVICE.

The People standing.

NOT unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name, give glory, for thy mercy and for thy truth's sake. Psalm cxv. 1.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against him; neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. Daniel, ix. 9, 10.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Matthew, vii. 7,8.

Minister.

HEAR, all ye people; give ear, all ye in

habitants of the world: the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The heavens and the earth praise him; the seas, and every thing that moveth therein. Sing unto the Lord, and give thanks at the remembrance of his goodness; trust in him at all times, ye people; pour out your hearts before him: God is a refuge for us.

People. Truly our souls wait upon God; from him cometh our salvation.

Introductory Prayer.

MOST great and glorious Lord our God, the universe in every part declares thy existence, and speaks thy praise; and we, inhabitants of this lower world, would now offer up unto thee our united homage, encouraged by thine impartial goodness, and thy gracious promises in the gospel of thy Son. May we worship thee, the Lord our Maker, Preserver, and Benefactor, with fear, gratitude, and love; celebrate thy praises with understanding and devotion; and hear the instructions of thy word, with reverence

and humility: that by all the means of grace we may grow wiser and better; may attain that peace of mind which is the peculiar portion of thy servants here; and at last become partakers of that happiness, which eye hath not seen, which ear hath not heard, and which it hath not entered the heart of man to conceive.

These our petitions we present unto thee, in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

¶ Then shall be recited the following Hymn of Praise, by the Minister and People alternately, all standing.

Minister.

WE praise thee, O God; we acknowledge and adore thee, as the one, true, and living God; who art eternal, independent, and unchangeable; the greatest, wisest, and best of Beings; the confidence and joy of every virtuous creature, to whom thou hast made thyself known.

Thou hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens, with all their hosts; the earth, and all things that are therein. We worship thee more especially as the Creator of man.

Thy hands have made and fashioned us; thou hast breathed into us the breath of life; and by thine inspiration hast given us understanding.

People. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all. Minister. Thou preservest all nature in existence; thou disposest all things by counsels which cannot err; thou maintainest the beauty and order of thy works. All creatures are subject to thy direction, and thou assignest them their proper station and duty.

People. They continue to this day according to thine ordinances; for all are thy ser

vants.

Minister. O thou most high God, thy government is righteous; thy providence is perfect; and all thy commandments are holy, just, and good. The obedience of all reasonable creatures is due to thee alone, the King of kings, the Judge of all.

People. We bow before thee, thy willing subjects; thy commandments are true, and righteous altogether.

Minister. O Lord, we revere thine almighty power, thy unerring wisdom, and thy perfect holiness; but in a more especial

manner would acknowledge, with unfeigned love and cheerful trust, thine infinite and everlasting goodness. Thou art the fountain of happiness, and thou diffusest blessings through the whole creation. The heavens declare thy glory; the earth is full of thy goodness; the day is thine; the night also is thine; and thou makest the morning and evening to rejoice. Thou alone art worthy to receive glory, honour, and praise, from all thy creatures.

People. There is none good but one; and that is God.

Minister. O God, our Creator, Sovereign, and Benefactor, while we rejoice in the being we have received from thee, and yield a willing submission to all the orders of thy government; we address thee as our heavenly Father, who hast made us to bear thine image, and hast offered us the privileges of thy children. Thou knowest our frame; thou rememberest that we are dust; thou hast encouraged us to cast our burdens upon. thee; and no good thing wilt thou withhold from them that walk uprightly.

People. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.
