(e.) For prescribing the hours of service, the duties and the method of service of the members of the Public Service, subject always to the provisions of any Act of the Legisla tive Assembly for the time being in force:

(f.) For prescribing and fixing the status, authority and duties of Deputy Heads of Department as a class, or of each Deputy Head of Department and of Officers and Chief Clerks as one class or separate classes, or of each Officer or Chief Clerk, subject always to the provisions of any Act of the Legislative Assembly for the time being in force: (g.) For prescribing the conditions of employment of clerks, stenographers and permanent employees, and, if thought fit, for prescribing a period of probation for the ascertainment of competency and efficiency:

(h.) For fixing and prescribing vacations for members of the Public Service, and defining the authority of each Head of Department to grant leave of absence from time to time to any member of the Public Service employed in such Department:

(i.) For prescribing and completing any other arrangement that may be found necessary to carry into effect the provisions of this Act:

(j.) Regulation and example as referred to in section 10:-A junior clerk who entered the service at age 16, receiving four hundred and twenty-dollars ($420) per year, and who four years later, when age 20 and receiving six hundred and twelve dollars ($612) per year, after having passed the examination qualifying him as a third class clerk, would not receive the highest initial salary of nine hundred and sixty dollars ($960) per year allowed by section 12, but would receive the sixty dollars ($60) advance and commence that grade at six hundred and seventy-two dollars ($672); or, if specially meritorious might receive seven hundred and thirty-two dollars ($732) for his first year's services as third class clerk.

An Act to amend the "Reformatory Act."

IS MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

1. This Act may be cited as the "Reformatory Act Amendment short title. Act, 1909."

2. The words "Juvenile Reformatory," in the title to chapter Amends title. 108 of the Revised Statutes, 1897, being the "Reformatory Act," are hereby struck out, and the words "Industrial School" are substi

tuted therefor.

3. Section 1 of said chapter 108 is hereby amended by striking Amends s. 1. out the words "Reformatory Act" and by substituting therefor New short title of the words "Industrial School Act."

4. Section 2 of said chapter 108 is hereby amended by striking Amends s. 2. out the words "Juvenile Reformatory," in the second line thereof, and by substituting therefor the words " Industrial School."

7. Said chapter 108 is hereby amended by adding the following section:

"16. It shall be the duty of the Superintendent or other head of the said School to prepare and forward to the AttorneyGeneral of the Province an annual report, on or before the first day of December in each year, to be laid before the Legislative Assembly within ten days of the first day of the next succeeding session; and such report shall mention the (a) ages, country of origin and calling; (b) offences, length of term or detention; (c) deaths, escapes, pardons, or other liberations during the preceding year; but in no case the names of the inmates.”

An Act to Authorise the Revision of the Statutes of

British Columbia.

HEREAS it is expedient to revise, classify and consolidate the Revised Statutes of British Columbia, 1897, the Public General Statutes of British Columbia passed since the date of the said Revised Statutes, and the Public Statute Law of England, in force in and applicable to this Province.

Therefore, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows::

1. This Act may be cited as the "Revised Statutes Act, 1909." Short title.

2. It shall be lawful for the Lieutenant-Governor in Council to Commission. issue a commission under the Great Seal to one or more persons, constituting them Commissioners for revising, classifying and consolidating the Revised Statutes of British Columbia, 1897, the Public General Statutes of British Columbia passed since the date of said Revised Statutes, and the Public Statute Law of England in force in and applicable to this Province.

Statutes, and parts thereof, which have expired, been repealed or had their effect, and all Statutes and parts of Statutes repealing any or any parts of any Statutes, and the schedules of all such repealed or repealing Statutes, and to alter the numbers of the Statutes that shall be in force at the time of the completion of their work by the said Commissioners, and the arrangement of the different sections thereof where necessary or advisable, and to prepare a comprehensive index for the whole.

5. The said Commissioners, in revising the said Statutes, may make such alterations in their language as are requisite in order to preserve a uniform mode of expression, and may make such minor amendments as are necessary to bring out more clearly what they deem to have been the intention of the Legislature, or to reconcile seemingly inconsistent enactments, or to correct clerical or typographical errors, and they may omit from said revision any Statutes. or parts of Statutes which, although printed among the "Public General Statutes," have reference only to a particular place or municipality, and have no general application throughout the Province. The provisions of this section shall not apply to English Statutes included in said consolidation.

6. It shall be lawful for the Lieutenant-Governor in Council to make provision for the payment of such sums as may be fixed by Order or Orders in Council, not exceeding the moneys to be appropriated from time to time by the Legislature for such purpose, as remuneration to the said Commissioners, and also for such further charges and expenses as shall be incurred, laid out and expended, in and about the work of such revision and the printing and binding of such Revised Statutes, or incident thereto.

7. No Judge of any Court of the Province shall be appointed a Commissioner.
