TO THE PRESENT EDITION.

THE First Edition of this work was published more than twenty years since, and it has long been out of print.

A favourable time seems to have arrived for offering a New Edition to the public. I have tried to make the work useful to Bankers in the performance of their daily duties; and although I am aware it is not by any means perfect, yet I believe, so far as it goes, those who are interested in the questions it discusses will find it be relied upon.
