dancers at this theatre, the ST. JAMES's, and COVENT GARDEN, would favour the idea that it is once more likely to be in a more animated condition. Perhaps no one is more likely to lead to this than Miss Lydia Thompson, whose dancing is one of the leading features of the St. James's. Another feature in the new management of this house is undoubtedly the reduction of prices. Considering the quarter of the town, it is rather surprising that the sixpenny gallery and shilling pit should have turned out to be so politic a change, especially as the opening pieces were so intolerable. It is, however, comforting to know that one of these "The Widow's Wedding"-has been consigned to an early fate. The remaining hope is, the burlesque (as it is termed) of "Virginius" will speedily follow so excellent an example. At the HAYMARKET, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mathews are at present performing with every success in "The Road to Ruin" and "Paul Pry. Över the water Mr. Tom Taylor has been enlisted under the ASTLEYAN banner, and has given assurance of his dramatic fertility in a spectacle founded on the fortunes of the great Italian Chief, Garibaldi. Leaving out of the question the taste of treating the fortunes and private life of a living celebrity on the stage, the author has supplied the hippodramatic boards with just such a drama that others before him have done. In no wise is the present work better or worse than scores of similar pieces seen on the same stage. The principal performers, Mr. Ennis, Miss Carson, and Mr. Phillips, do not flag in their endeavours to promote the success of the spectacle in which they are assisted in the most marked manner by Mr. George Belmore, whose nigger servant is a mighty genuine piece of acting. In Leicester-square the arena of the ALHAMBRA PALACE, has lately been furnishing plenty of amusement for the public in the entertaining spectacle of the "Flitch of Bacon," which is altogether given in a manner that speaks wonders for the managerial skill of Mr. M'Collum. A general meeting of the Jockey Club was held at Newmarket on Wednesday, in the Second October Meeting; present : The proposed alteration of Rule 64 was brought forward by Admiral Rous, according to notice (see Calendar, No. xxxviii.), and the following amendment was moved by Lord Glasgow: "That when a prize or any part of it is given in Plate, the piece of plate shall not be calculated in the value of the prize, whether it is paid for out of the stakes, or given in addition to the stakes." On a division the numbers were equal, and therefore the rule remains unaltered. Resolved, that a new course be established, beginning at the starting post of the last half of the Ab. M., and finishing at the D.M. winning post, to be called the New Yearling Course. Notice was given that at the next meeting of the club the question as to the best course for running the Queen's Plates at Newmarket will be brought under consideration. The great autumn handicaps have quite overpowered next year's Derby, upon which, as our table will show, very little has been doing. The American, however, appears established as first favourite for the winter, and The Wizard has got back to his old price. The effect of the week's racing has scarcely as yet developed itself, but no doubt we shall have the list a little more in form by next month. LATE THE PROPERTY OF HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF RUTLAND.
