Os versos inglezes são iambicos, trocbaicos, dactylicos ou anapesticos. O pé iambo consta de huma syllaba breve seguida de outra longa. Ex. pursūe, disdāin. D'elle se formão versos de quatro, seis, oito ou dez syllabas. Ex. de quatro syllabas.

Hoje o alexandrino he só usado para diversificar os versos heroicos. Ex.

A needless Alexandrine ends the song,

That, like a wounded snake , drags its slow length along, etc. O verso de quatorze syllabas he hoje separado em dois versos alternados, hum de oito, e outro de seis syllabas. Ex.
