developemeat which such a channel of free inter-communication would give to the agricultural, mining and manufacturing resources, and the natural wealth of a large and important section of the Union-the great facilities and aids which it would afford to the commercel and internal trade of the country, particularly at times, when the heat and sickly climate of the South, and the severity of winter at the North, interpose obstacles to a safe and speedy intercourse between the great Valley and the Atlantic; the ease and expedition with which troops and munitions of war could be transported from the interior to the seaboard, all conspire to render its improvement an object of national importance, and of great interest and advantage to the country. That at Knoxville and Chattanooga, on the Tennessee river, a considerable commercial business is now done, which must soon very greatly increase:-Wherefore, Your memorialists respectfully ask your honorable body to declare Knoxville and Chattanooga ports of entry-and to make such appropriation of money as you in your wisdom may deem right and proper for the improvement of the navigation of said river. Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, That the Governor of the State be requested to transmit to our Senators and Representatives in the Congress of the United States, a copy of the foregoing memorial, with a request that they present it to their respective Houses. A Resolution directory to the Attorney General of the 6th Judicial Circuit. Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. That the Attorney General of the 6th Judicial Circuit, in receiving from the securities of William Rice, late sheriff of Sumner county, the State tax due from said sheriff, shall allow the said securities to retain, instead of the said Rice, the commissions allowed by law for collecting said taxes. Whereas, General William Carroll, late Governor of the State of Tennessee, departed this life since the adjournment of the last General Assembly. And whereas, the memory and public services of that distinguished military chieftain and civilian merits some testimonial from the people of Tennessee, of their respect to his memory. Therefore, Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, That his Excellency Aaron V. Brown, Governor of the State, be and he is hereby authorized and requested to appoint some suitable person to erect and place over the grave of that distinguished man a suitable and appropriate monų→ ment, with an inscription appropriate to his memory. 2. Resolved, That the comptroller issue a warrant to the treasurer of the State of Tennessee upon the order of the Governor aforesaid, for the sum necessary to pay for constructing the same. Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Tennesssee, That the Comptroller of the treasury be required to investigate and report the state and condition of all the monies received by the entry-taker of Hawkins county, for lands entered within Walter Sims' survey, under the act of 7th January, 1830. He will report what amount has been paid to the heirs of Walter Sims; how much remains unpaid, and in whose hands, and report to this General Assembly, if practicable, if not to the next General Assembly.
